Dear Friends

Yesterday in HK's Central area, on my way home from Hei Ling Chau Island drug centre, I saw a badly disabled young beggar kneeling, with head down ....and no arms, but  asking alms

Man is one of many who come (are brought) to HK by a well-organised group/gang. The disabled people enter HK on a 7-day visa, stay in the same flat in Jordan, near Jordan Metro Station (Exit B), and are put on display to get money. Possibly some of them were deliberately maimed/deformed at birth to be beggars

I never give them money, but offer them something to eat (if they have a hand). And lately I've been trying to share a few words with them...asking where they're from ....how long they're staying etc...then putting my hand on their shoulder I clumsily try to say something like "In this life, you don't have arms/legs, but in the next life you'll have arms/legs. This terrible problem is a temporary one. This is Jesus (showing my Cross). He loves you and will bless you in the next life"

What else can one say?
Can one just walk by on the other side?

Then I give them a little picture of the Cross, or a booklet if they can read. All pretty heavy stuff when you hear it for the first time.
But probably it's the only time in their lives they will ever meet a priest

Last year I got to know three such people fairly well....they came to HK several times. We had a couple of canteen meals, and once they came to my home in Jordan

This 2008 report says that China has 83 million disabled people. Most of them receive almost nothing from the government.  According to 3 friends in above photos...daily allowance from government is enough to buy one bottle of water

Which is why some of them come to HK....to try to get money for themselves and their families

They should be in special centres, from their youngest days...or at least have access to special centres ...for regular therapy etc.

This is a mind-blowing area waiting for NGOs, churches and other groups to work with the government for the great benefit of society.
I am sad to think how few of the 83,000,000 are receiving any help at the moment from the government, NGOs, churches or other groups

I help start a little centre in Zhaoqing, but it got closed down.

Centre had individual homes for 6 families, with a large common room,
so that families with handicapped children could live on site.
Maybe this could still be a model for the future....rather than putting handicapped children into a place away from their families
