Dear Friends
Hello
on Bastille Day!
All around the world today,
people will hear the French national anthem: the
Marseillaise
...whose music just happens to be that of the
Lions' football club song
....and the Lions are playing tonight in Brisbane!
Lions to win on Bastille Day!
Speaking
of liberty,
fraternity and equality (national motto of France)
recently an inmate asked me "Father, when I go to court,
should I plead guilty or not-guilty?"
A guilty plead means a reduction of one third of a sentence.
People not confident of winning their case
sometimes plead guilty, even if innocent,
because if they lose their case they get one third extra time
I
said to the man, whose case is a complicated one,
"If you're guilty, plead guilty. If you're innocent, plead not-guilty.
Whether you're innocent or guilty, speak the truth,
and truthfully describe the circumstances
involved in your case (e.g. pressured by "friends" etc).
Speak the truth, and the truth will set you free" (c.f. John's
Gospel 8.32)
