At recent Olympic Games and World Cup Finals of various types of
football, TV viewers have noticed people holding up "John 3.16"
signs....to remind the world of what some people say is the most important
sentence ever written
Some years ago on Lantau Island in Hong Kong, in order to make contact with more local men (they were a rare species at Sunday Mass), I arranged a men's night with the plan of inviting a well-known football player to be the special guest
A local teacher told me that Lantau men were not all that interested in football....more interested in horse racing...better to get a well-known jockey
I knew that the South China Morning Post racing scribe was a very jovial and helpful Irishman....so I asked him to help me contact a jockey
Not a jockey he said....I have a better idea, he said....I know a well-known trainer who will be a good drawcard for you.
He mentioned the trainers name....didn't ring a bell for me or anyone else at the church...trainer kindly accepted the invitation. I had no idea the trainer was rather contraversial
A few days later HK's biggest daily paper....on main page of
racing section....had a photo of the trainer, smoking a cigar, super-imposed on
photo of front of HK's Catholic cathedral...with the words of John 3.16 slightly
re-interpreted:
"God loves all men. All men love horse"!
