November 23, 2012           Say “No” to drugs

In the last few weeks, three dear friends have died of drugs. Two were in their sixties. One was mid-thirties. I can’t understand why it’s so easy to get drugs in Hong Kong .

Last Friday night I was outside the Yau Ma Tei clinic. In the space of about 30 minutes from around 7.15,  I saw more than 20 people openly buy drugs. An old man was sitting on the footpath near the clinic entrance. A steady stream of people went up to him, gave him money, and received drugs. Some of the drugs were kept in his mouth. I saw one Nepal man hand over $700.  Two or three other men were from the Sub-Continent. The rest were local Chinese men. A man about 40 years old  seemed to be managing the old man’s business: supplying him with goods and receiving the proceeds of sales. Several men standing at strategic locations near the clinic were probably lookouts watching for the police. Not one policeman was to be seen during the 30 minutes.

The toilet opposite Temple Street Park is where at least one person dies from drugs most weeks.
Drugs are sold in the park. People in various forms of drug dizziness are a common sight in the park.
My request to the police (whose YMT headquarters is directly behind the clinic): please have an officer on duty outside the clinic every night. And also one in the park. This will help clean up the YMT area. Make life hard for the drug dealers.
