Esther 5

After Esther prayed to God for a long time,
she went to the palace and presented herself to the king.

At first the king was angry that Esther came without being invited,
but then his heart softened and he welcomed her.

When King Ahasuerus saw that Esther was distressed,
he asked her what was wrong. He promised to do anything for her.

Esther asked that there be two special banquets for herself, the king and Haman.
The king agreed and the banquets were arranged.

Haman meanwhile was making his own arrangements:
a high gallows on which to hang Mordecai.

Dear God, please move the hearts of rulers to be kind to their people

Psalm 71

In you, O Lord, I take refuge.
Please hear me and help me.

Be a rock where I can take refuge.
Rescue me from people who want to hurt me.

It is you, O Lord, who are my hope.
In you I have trusted since I was young.

From my mother's womb you have been my help.
My hope has always been in you.

Now that I am old, please do not forget me.
Now that my strength fails, do not abandon me.

Now that I am old and grey-headed,
may I continue to trust in you   and proclaim your help.

To you I will sing with the harp.
All day long my tongue will tell of your goodness to me.

Lord, may all elderly people put their trust and hope in you

1 Peter 1

Blessed be God the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ.
In his great mercy, he has made us his children.
He has prepared a place in heaven for us to live with him forever

This is a cause of great joy for you,
even though life in this world has many trials

You did not see Jesus, yet you love him, and you believe in him.
Faith gives you confidence to look forward to the salvation of your souls

Jesus, I have never seen you with my physical eyes,
but I love you and believe in you

John 6

Near the Sea of Galilee, a large crowd followed Jesus,
attracted by the way he healed so many sick people

Jesus climbed a hillside and sat there with his disciples.
Seeing the huge crowd, Jesus said to one of his disciples
"How can we feed so many people?"

The disciple Andrew said "There's a young boy here with 5 loaves and 2 fish.
But what good is that for such a huge crowd?"

Jesus said "Make the people sit down". The crowd of about 5,000 sat down on the grass

Then Jesus took the loaves, gave thanks, and gave them out to all the people.
He did the same with the fish. Everyone ate as much as they wanted to

The people, seeing this miracle, said "He really is God's great prophet".
Jesus, aware that they wanted to make him king, slipped away and went up the hill by himself

Jesus, please bless my prayers and actions to help others,
just as you blessed the loaves and fish
