Genesis 47, 48, 49

Pharaoh met Jacob and Joseph's  brothers
and welcomed them to be shepherds in the land of Goshen.

Jacob blessed Pharaoh.
Pharaoh humbly received Jacob's blessing.

Joseph provided food for his family during the famine.

As the famine got worse
the Egyptians sold their livestock and their farms to Joseph
in return for grain.

Joseph  made the Egyptians promise
that when the famine was over
they would  give one fifth of their produce to Pharaoh.

Jacob lived in Egypt for seventeen more years
before he died in Joseph's arms.

Before his death,
Jacob blessed all his sons.

Jacob adopted and also blessed Joseph's two sons
Ephraim and Manasseh

Dear God, please bless Egypt and Israel,  and help them be friends

Psalms  61 - 65

O God, hear my cry,
you who are my refuge and help.

In you alone is my soul at rest.
My help comes from you.

Take refuge in God, everyone in trouble.
Trust him at all times.

O God, you are my God, for you I long.
My body and soul thirst for you
like a dry, weary land without water.

Your love is better than life,
my lips will speak your praise.

On my bed I remember you.
On you I muse through the night.

You are the Creator of the world.
You care for the earth, you give it water.

To you our praise is due,
wherever we are on earth.

Lord, my soul clings to you. Your right hand holds me fast

Acts 14

In Lycaonia, there was a man who had never walked in his life,
because his feet were crippled from birth

As he listened to Paul preaching,
Paul noticed him and saw that he had the faith to be cured

Paul said in a loud voice "Get to your feet! Stand up!"
The crippled man jumped up and began to walk

The local people thought that Paul and Barnabas must be gods,
so Paul said to them "We are only human beings like you.
We have come with Good News
to help you turn from empty idols to the living God who made heaven and earth.
It is he who sends you rain and who makes your crops grow"

Jesus,  help people turn away from idol worship

Matthew 14

Not long after Jesus began traveling and teaching,
King Herod arrested John the Baptist and put him in prison.

This was because John had told Herod he was breaking the Law
by living with Herodias,  his brother's wife.

During a birthday party for Herod,
the daughter of Herodias danced.

Her dancing so pleased Herod
that he said he would give her anything she wanted.

Herodias told her to ask for the head of John the Baptist on a dish.
Herod then had John beheaded.

John's disciples came and buried the body.

Jesus, please give the world good leaders,
and protect people from bad leaders like Herod
