Reading:  Two Samuel 12

The Lord sent the prophet Nathan to David.
Nathan said: "Why did you do what is displeasing to the Lord?"

David replied: "I have sinned against the Lord."

Nathan said: "The Lord forgives you, but because of your sin,
the child will die."

After the child died, Bathsheba conceived another son by David,
whom she named Solomon. The Lord specially blessed Solomon.

Reflection:
Like Peter in the Gospels, David was sorry for having sinned.
Like Peter in the Gospel, David "got up and kept going" after he had fallen

Prayer:
"Have mercy on me, God, in your kindness. In your compassion blot out my offence"  (David's prayer in Psalm 51)

Reading:  Psalm 10

Bless the Lord, my soul!
Lord God, how great you are.

You make the clouds your chariot.
You walk on the wings of the wind.

You make springs gush forth in the valleys.
They give drink to all the animals of the field.

You make grass grow for the cattle
and plants to provide food for people.

You give us wine, to cheer our hearts
and oil to make our faces shine.

You made the moon to mark the months.
The sun knows the time for its setting.

How many are your works, O Lord.
In wisdom you have made them all.

The earth is full of your riches
and the sea is swarming with life.

All things, great and small, look to you for food.
You open your hand, they have their fill.

You send forth your spirit, and life is created.
You renew the face of the earth.

I will sing to the Lord all my life.
May my thoughts be pleasing to him.

Reflection:
One wise choice we can make, even if we live in a noisy, busy city:
make a decision to notice flowers, trees, gardens as we pass them; notice the sounds of birds.  After a while our noticing will become automatic ....and each sight of a lovely flower, each sound of a bird, will be picked up by our senses ...and give a little thrill of joy to our hearts ...which can lead on to a prayer to the One responsible for birds and flowers

Prayer:  Lord, please help us more often notice the beauty of creation, and praise you for it

Reading:  Revelation 13

The dragon gave authority and power to a beast with seven heads.
For a time, the beast waged war on the saints

Then I saw a second beast. It was a servant of the first beast, and made people everywhere worship the first beast

Reflection:
The dragon and the two beasts are a parody of the Trinity

Prayer: Father, Son and Holy Spirit - may people worship you,
and not worship Satan and the two beasts

Reading:  Matthew 8

Jesus and his "fisher of men" friends got into a boat
to cross the lake near Capernaum.

Jesus was so tired that he went to sleep in the boat.
Then a sudden storm caused big waves to lash the boat.

Jesus' friends woke him up  and said
"Save us, Lord, we are sinking".

Jesus stood up, and ordered the wind and sea to be calm.
Straight away the wind and sea were calm.

Jesus' friends said to each other
"Who is this? Even the wind and sea obey him."

Reflection:
Each time I use this reading I like to sing
Put your hand in the hand of the man who stilled the water

Prayer:
Jesus, please calm the storms in my life, my family, our world
