  Reading:  Exodus 32

Moses stayed on the mountain about 40 days.

During this time the people told Aaron
to make them a god out of gold.

Aaron  made a golden calf and the people worshipped it.

On the mountain, God said to Moses
"Go down now, because the people have been unfaithful to me.
I will punish them, but of you I will make a great nation."

Moses pleaded with God not to punish the people.

When Moses, carrying the two tablets, came down the mountain
he saw the people partying before the golden calf.

He threw down the tablets and broke them.
He smashed the golden calf.

The men of the tribe of Levi were then commissioned
to go through the camp and kill many men.
About 3,000 men were killed
.

Reflection:
No thing, no pleasure, no activity, no person, no human relationship can fully satisfy the human heart.
The human heart can only be fully satisfied by a relationship with its Creator. Only God can make the human heart "fly". Which is why excessive, unhealthy devotion to anyone or anything apart from God will never get us "off the ground".

Prayer:
Dear God,  please don't let us ever worship anyone or anything except you

Reading: Psalm 91

He who dwells in the shelter of the Most High
says to the Lord "you are my refuge in whom I trust".

The Lord will hide you and protect you.
Under his wings you will find refuge.

You will not fear any night time terror,
nor any attack during the day.

Upon you no evil shall fall,
no plague approach where you dwell.

For you has he commanded his angels
to keep you safe in all your ways.

Reflection:
A beautiful psalm to pray before night time sleep.
Recommended for people who experience anxiety/panic attacks

Prayer: Dear God, thank you for your protection day and night

Reading:  Colossians  1

As I sit in my prison, I am at peace in my suffering, offering up my suffering to Christ for the sake of his body, the Church

God chose me to reveal to you his sacred message: Christ, your hope of glory,  is among you

My aim is to bind you together in love, and to keep you growing in your knowledge of God's plan for your lives

"Bind us together, Lord, Bind us together, With cords that cannot be broken,
Bind us together, Lord, Bind us together, Bind us together in Love"
  (song)

Reading:  Luke 9

Jesus now began explaining to his disciples
how he would suffer, die and rise from the dead.

He also said
"If you want to be my disciple, you must deny yourself,
take up your own cross, and follow me.

Selfishness will ruin your life.
Self-sacrificing will bless your life.

What use is it to have everything in this world
yet miss out on Heaven?"

Reflection:
Yesterday at a detention centre I was talking to a guard who is from India.
I wished him "Happy Diwali".  He said for Diwali he went to the main Indian temple in Hong Kong.
He said he goes to the temple every Sunday, and after prayers, spends time as a volunteer washing dishes. I thought to myself he is putting into practice Jesus' words of self-sacrifice .... giving up some of his free time to help others

Prayer:
Jesus, please help me find my life by losing it in service of others
