  Reading:  Genesis 12-13

God said to a man in the land of Haran named Abraham,
"Leave your own country and go to a new land I will give you.
I will make you into a great nation."

So Abraham and his family  left the land of Haran
and moved to the land of Canaan.

God said to Abraham,
"I will make your descendants as many
as the number of dust particles on the ground
....an uncountable number."

Even though Abraham and his wife Sarah
were old and had no children,
Abraham believed God's promise to give them many descendants.

Reflection:
God often calls us to "go to a new land":
- a new job
- a new neighbourhood
- a new group for helping others
- a new apostolate
Or as Pope Francis puts it:
God is calling us Catholics to "go out" (of ourselves) to help others, especially the poor.
For Pope Francis the land of Canaan is the land of the Poor

Prayer: Dear God, please help me respond to your call, like Abraham

Reading: Psalms 144

Blessed be the Lord, my rock,
who gives me strength for every situation.

He is my love, my fortress.
He is my stronghold, my savior.

To you, O God, will I sing a new song,
you who so often rescued David your servant.

Happy the people whose God is the Lord.
Please continue to bless your people, Lord.

Let our sons flourish like saplings
grown tall and strong from their youth;

our daughters graceful as columns,
adorned as though for a palace.

Let our crops and stock be blessed.
May there be no sound of weeping on our streets.

Reflection:
A person who loves God is wise.
A
nation which loves God is wise!..."Happy the people whose God is the Lord"

Prayer: Lord, please help me, please help our nation, to be good and wise

Reading:  1 Corinthians 12

The Holy Spirit gives us many different gifts

Some people have the gift of wise preaching.
Some people have the gift of an extra strong faith.
Some people have the gift of healing sick people.
Some people have other gifts like the power of miracles, prophecy, recognizing spirits, and the ability to speak in tongues

Reflection:
Jesus said that God the Father wants to give us his children the best of all gifts:
the Holy Spirit

Prayer:

Holy Spirit, please increase your influence in my life.
Please give me the gift of (..name...)

Reading: Mark 12

Jesus sat down in the Temple area and noticed people putting money into a donation box to help the poor

Many rich people put in a lot of money.
A poor widow put in two small coins

Jesus said to his disciples  "That poor widow has donated more than all the other people, for they put in money they had left over, but she  put in the only money she had"

Reflection:
Vatican II taught: "We are obliged to come to the relief of the poor
and to do so not merely out of our superfluous goods"
...which is what most of us most of the time do ....we rarely leave ourselves short in order to help someone else.

Prayer
Jesus, please make me more generous in helping poor people
