 Reading - Reflection - Prayer   July 8, 2013
With readers' comments, below

  Reading:  Daniel 4-6

Once when Daniel was asleep, he had a vision of heaven:

"Thrones were put in place
and one of great age took his seat.

His robe was white as snow,
his hair as pure as wool.

A thousand thousand waited on him,
ten thousand times ten thousand stood before him.

Then coming on the clouds of heaven
was one like a son of man.

On him was conferred  glory and kingship,
and people of all nations became his servants.

His kingship is eternal.
His empire will never be destroyed."

Reflection:
"Son of man" here can be understood to be mean Jesus.
We're used to thinking of Jesus as a man walking around Galilee.
Someday when we see him in his glory as King of Heaven
we'll say what Steve Jobs said when he had a glimpse of Heaven before leaving earth:
"Oh wow, Oh wow, Oh wow!"

Prayer:
Jesus, please help me understand that you are the "Son of Man"  whose kingship is eternal

Reading:  Psalm 116

I love the Lord for he has heard the cry of my appeal.
He turned his ear to me in the day when I called him.

They surrounded me, sorrow, distress and the snares of death.
I was helpless, so the Lord saved me.

Calm down my soul, for the Lord has been good.
I will walk in the presence of the Lord in the land of the living.

How can I repay the Lord for his goodness to me?
The cup of salvation I will raise to thank the Lord.

O precious in the eyes of the Lord is the death of his faithful.
Lord, you have loosened my bonds. I am your servant.

Reflection:
As we grow older, we become more aware of the sacrifices our parents made for us when we were young.
As we grow older, we become more aware of God's goodness right through our lives....starting with the gift of existence

Prayer: Thank you, Lord, for all your goodness to me

Reading:  Romans 10

I have a really great love for the Jews. I pray to God for them to be saved

They have a strong belief in God, but their zeal is misguided

They can't see that friendship with God is a gift from God,
not just
a matter of external practices

Reflection:
Several times in the last few months Pope Francis has talked about the danger of Pelagianism
....which is what Romans 10 above is talking about: thinking we can "be saved" by our own efforts

Prayer: Jesus, some people have mixed up ideas about religion
(.. Mormons, Jehovah Witnesses...Pelagians).
Help them know the truth as you revealed it

Reading: Mark 6

After feeding the crowd with 5 loaves and 2 fish,
Jesus told his disciples to go by boat across the nearby lake.

Jesus stayed to send the crowds away.
Then he went up into the hills to pray.

When it was dark, the boat was far from land,
but battling large waves caused by a strong head-wind.

Jesus then walked on the water towards the boat.
He called out to his disciples "Courage. It is I. Don't be afraid."

Then he got into the boat, and the wind stopped.

A lovely Reflection:
YouTube: With Jesus in the boat

Prayer: Jesus, please give me courage by helping me remember that you are in my boat (my life)
