 Reading - Reflection - Prayer   June 26, 2013
With readers' comments, below

  Reading:  Ezekiel 4-11

Ezekiel used many images to describe the fall of Jerusalem.
But the people and their leaders would not believe him.

God used Ezekiel to say to the exiles:

"I will bring you back to your homeland of Israel.
I will give you a new heart and a new spirit.

Then you will keep my commandments.
Then you will know that I am the Lord."

Reflection:
Doctors can give us a new physical heart, a "heart transplant",
but only God can give us a "new heart" in the sense of a new mentality, a new understanding, a new compassion etc

Prayer:
Grant to us, O Lord, a  heart renewed

   Reading:  Psalm 106

O give thanks to the Lord for he is good.
His great love is without end.

They are happy who do what is right,
who at all times remember what is just.

When our ancestors came out of Egypt,
they forgot the greatness of God's love.

Each time they strayed, God forgave them.
But still they continued to forget God who was their saviour,
God who had done such great things for them in Egypt.

Reflection:
Doing good makes us glad. Doing bad, makes us sad

Prayer:  O Lord, our God, please don't let us forget your love

Reading:  Romans 6

When we were baptized, two things happened:

1: We went into Jesus' tomb and joined him in death. We died.

2: We rose from the dead with Jesus. We came back to life

This dying and rising means we have died to sin, and risen to a new life.

We died to an old life, and  we came back to a new life.

We have been re-born, born again

Reflection:
A newly baptized person is like a newly formatted disc - totally clean, totally new

Prayer: Jesus, please help me leave my old life behind. Help me live a new life with you

Reading: Mark 4

One day Jesus told the people this story:

A farmer was planting seeds in his field.
Some seeds fell on the path. Birds ate them.

Some seeds fell on rocky ground.
They became sickly plants, without roots, and died.

Some seeds fell among thorns.
When they became plants, they were choked by the thorns.

Some seeds fell on good soil
and produced a rich harvest.

Jesus explained the story:
People who hear God's word without good will
are like the seeds on the path.
They are easy prey for Satan.

People who hear God's word only superficially
are like the seeds on rocky ground.
As soon as difficulties come, such people easily give up.

People who hear God's word with one ear
but with the other are listening to the call of greed and pleasure
are like the seeds among thorns. Greed kills the word.

People who hear God's word with good will and put it into practice
are like the good seeds which produced a rich harvest.

Reflection:
Not easy to help people who don't have good will.
Before seed can be planted, they need watering ....by friendliness and love

Prayer: Jesus, please help me show friendliness to people who need watering
