 Reading - Reflection - Prayer   June 18, 2013
With readers' comments, below

  Reading:  Jeremiah 46-52

Jeremiah predicted that the powerful nations involved in Israel's capture would all fall:

the Egyptians, the Philistines, the Moabites, the Ammonites,
the Babylonians and others.

Jeremiah also reminded Israel to rely on the help of the Lord
more than the help of other nations:

"Our redeemer is strong. The Lord is his name.
He will bring peace to the world".

Reflection:
This is our final reading from Jeremiah for this cycle.
What a hard life he had:  preaching an unwelcome message for about 30 years
....and yet at the end of his life....still preaching hope....hope in the Lord

Prayer:
Lord, please give us a double portion of Jeremiah's hope in you

   Reading:  Psalm 100

Cry out with joy to the Lord, all the earth.
Serve the Lord with gladness.
Come before him, singing for joy.

Know that he, the Lord, is God. He made us, we belong to him.
We are his people, the sheep of his flock.

Go within his gates, giving thanks.
Enter his temple with songs of praise.
Give thanks to him and bless his name.

Indeed, how good is the Lord,
eternal his merciful love.
He is faithful from age to age.

Reflection:
A stirring rendition of this psalm is The Old 100th
 - as in this famous video of the coronation of Queen Elizabeth

Prayer:  Dear Lord, please help us to serve you with gladness,
even in - especially in - times of difficulty

Reading:  Romans 1

Refusing to honor the Creator is why people's behaviour went bad:

why women turned from natural intercourse to unnatural practices,
and why men gave up natural intercourse to be consumed with passion for each other,
men doing shameless things with men, and getting an appropriate reward for their perversion

Since people refused to honor God, they have dishonored themselves

Reflection: Some people explain away passages like this one....to justify a gay lifestyle.

Prayer: Jesus, please help people not be mislead by false teaching which says that a "gay" lifestyle is ok.
....at the same time showing the greatest compassion for gay people

Reading: Mark 2

Jesus went again to the Sea of Galilee.
Many people came to him and he taught them there by the sea.

Near the sea he saw a tax collector Levi (Matthew) working at the customs house.
Jesus said to him "Follow me". He got up and followed him.

Levi gave a dinner in his house for Jesus.
Sitting with Jesus were some tax collectors and "sinners".
In fact Jesus' followers included many tax collectors and "sinners".

Some religious leaders asked Jesus' disciples "Why does he eat with tax collectors and 'sinners'?"

Jesus himself answered them:
"It is not the healthy who need the doctor, but the sick. I did not come to call the virtuous, but sinners."

Reflection:
How many religious leaders today ever have a meal with "tax collectors and sinners"?

Prayer: Jesus, thank you for being a friend of people who are rejected and despised
