 Reading - Reflection - Prayer   June 14, 2013
With readers' comments, below

    Reading:  Jeremiah 33-35

Most of the people and their leaders ignored God's message
delivered by Jeremiah

But one group listened to Jeremiah and obeyed God's message:
That group was the nomad clan of Rechabites.

At God's command Jeremiah invited them to a meal near the Temple
and invited them to drink wine.

But they replied that they had been told by God
never to own property or build houses or be farmers or drink wine.

Jeremiah then spoke to the people watching the Rechabites:
"See how this clan is obedient to the message of the Lord,
unlike most of the people and its leaders who ignore God.

Because this clan has been faithful and obedient,
therefore it will  always be blessed by the Lord".

Reflection:
It's not at all necessarily the case that my family have problems because I've been unfaithful to the Lord,
but it is definitely the case that my faithfulness to the Lord will bring blessings on my family

Prayer:
Lord, please help me be faithful to you,  like the Rechabites

Reading:   Psalm 97

The Lord is king, let earth rejoice,
the many coastlands be glad.

Cloud and darkness are his robes.
His throne is justice and goodness.

The skies proclaim his goodness.
All peoples see his glory.

Let those who serve idols be ashamed.
Let all creation worship  the Creator.

Light shines forth for good people
and joy for the upright of heart.

Rejoice in the Lord, all good people.
Give glory to his holy name.

Reflection:
YouTube: How Great Thou Art

Prayer: Lord, our God, our Creator, how great Thou art

Reading:  Romans 1

From Paul, a servant of Christ Jesus, who has been called to be an apostle,
and specially chosen to preach the Good News

This news is about the Son of God who, according to the human nature he took, was a descendant of David

This news is about Jesus Christ our Lord who, by his resurrection from the dead, proved he was the Son of God

From him I received my mission to preach the obedience of faith to non-Jewish nations

You are one of these nations. You belong to Jesus Christ

To you who are God's beloved friends in Rome, may God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ give grace and peace

Reflection:
This article is a not-too-complicated introduction to Romans

Prayer:
Jesus, Son of God,  may all nations know and love you

Reading: Mark 1

The next morning, long before dawn,
Jesus left the house and went off to a lonely place to pray.

When Simon and the other fishermen found him, they said
"Everyone is looking for you".

Jesus replied "We must go to the nearby towns,
so that I can preach there too, because that is why I came".

Jesus went all through Galilee,
preaching in the prayer halls and casting out devils.

Reflection:
At the moment I'm re-reading Pastor Hsi, the life of a famous ex-drug addict who helped thousands of other addicts in China. As his story and ministry develop, he repeatedly mentions "I need more time for prayer" ....as was the case for Jesus in the reading above. The busier he became, the more he needed time for prayer

Prayer: Jesus, please help us make time for prayer in our busy lives
