 Reading - Reflection - Prayer   June 10, 2013
With readers' comments, below

    Reading:  Jeremiah 24-29

For 23 years Jeremiah spoke the message of the Lord,
calling on people to do good and turn away from evil.

But the people, especially the leaders, refused to listen to Jeremiah.
They eventually arrested Jeremiah and planned to kill him.

Jeremiah also sent a message to the exiles in Babylon.
But they too refused his message.

Reflection:
Wow....23 years of failure, insult, opposition, rejection.
Can we complain when sometimes we meet a little bit of opposition/rejection?

Prayer:
Lord, please give me some of Jeremiah's courage and faith and trust and perseverance

Reading:   Psalm 94

O Lord,  Judge of the earth,
how long will the wicked crush the poor?

The wicked say "God does not hear".
But can he who made the ear, not hear?

Blessed are those whom the Lord teaches.
The Lord gives them peace in troubled times.

When cares increase in my heart,
God's consolation calms my soul.

Reflection:
Better than tablets and medicine (...not saying ignore doctor....should follow doctor's advice)
is consolation from God ...per prayer, meditation, worship etc. Medicine can treat only the symptoms. God can treat the cause.

Prayer: Lord, when cares and troubles increase, please  help us to trust in you.

Reading:  Acts 28

We were on the island of Malta. The local people were really kind to us. They made us welcome.
They lit a huge fire because the weather was cold and rain was falling.

Paul collected a bundle of sticks and was putting them on the fire, when a snake bit his hand and held on.
The locals expected him to die. But he just shook the snake into the fire. He was ok

The local Roman governor kindly gave us hospitality for three days.
The governor's father was very sick in bed with fever and dysentery.
He was healed when Paul prayed for him with the laying on of hands.
Word of the healing got around fast, and soon everyone on the island who was sick, came and got healed

Reflection:
We often tend to forget the prominent role that healing played in Paul's ministry
.... as in Jesus' ministry...and as should be the case in the ministry of every Christian leader

Prayer:
Jesus, please help Christians rediscover the ministry of healing               (c.f.  The Healing Reawakening)

Reading: Mark 1

Jesus went to Galilee and proclaimed the Good News from God.
"The time has come" he said "and the kingdom of God is close at hand. Repent, and believe the Good News."

As he was walking along by the sea of Galilee, he saw two fishermen Simon and his brother Andrew.
Jesus said to them "Follow me and I will make you into fishers of men".  Simon and Andrew then followed Jesus.

Going a little further, Jesus saw two more fishermen James and his brother John. He called them also to follow him.
They left their nets and boat and followed him.

Reflection:
All Christians are called to witness to Jesus by a life of goodness, but some Christians are called to be full-time Gospel workers

Prayer: Jesus, please bless all the people who work full time as "fishers of men"
