 Reading - Reflection - Prayer   June 4, 2013
With readers' comments, below

Reading:  Jeremiah 18

The Lord told Jeremiah to go to the house of the potter.

At the potter's house, Jeremiah watched the potter working.
Sometimes a vessel he was making wasn't shaped properly.

So the potter would take the clay and start again
and shape the clay into a new vessel.

Then the Lord told Jeremiah:
"The House of Israel is clay, I am  the potter.
I  keep on trying to form Israel into a holy nation."

Reflection:
Cary Landry's beautiful song Abba, Father

Prayer:
Lord, you are the potter, we are the clay - the work of your hands.
Please mould us into what you want us to become

Reading:   Psalm 91

He who dwells in the shelter of the Most High
says to the Lord "you are my refuge in whom I trust".

The Lord will hide you and protect you.
Under his wings you will find refuge.

You will not fear any night time terror,
nor any attack during the day.

Upon you no evil shall fall,
no plague approach where you dwell.

For you has he commanded his angels
to keep you safe in all your ways.

Reflection:
A beautiful psalm to pray before night time sleep.
Recommended for people who experience anxiety/panic attacks

Prayer: Dear God, thank you for your protection day and night

Reading:  Acts 27

Navigation at that time of the year was dangerous, since winter was starting.
But the ship's captain set sail hoping to reach Phoenix, a harbor in Crete

Suddenly a fierce storm began and the ship could not be turned head-on to the wind.
We had to let ourselves be driven by the wind

The ship was badly damaged by the storm. On the second day, the cargo was dumped overboard

For several days both sun stars were invisible as  the storm raged.  We lost all hope of surviving

Reflection:
Numerous books and movies have the theme "we lost all hope of surviving" ...and then survived.
c.f. this list of survival movies  (none of which I have seen!)

Prayer:
Jesus, please help people who are in "no hope of surviving" situations

Reading: Matthew 28

The 11 apostles went to Galilee,
to the mountain where Jesus had arranged to meet them.

When they saw him they fell down before him in worship.

Jesus said to them
"All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me.

Go, therefore, and make disciples of all the nations.
Baptize them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit.

Teach them to understand and live according to my words.
And know that
I am with you always, yes, to the end of time".

Reflection:
At the beginning of Matthew's Gospel, there are the words: They will call him Emmanuel, a name which means 'God-is-with-us' (1.23)
At the end of Matthew's Gospel (above) there are the words: I am with you always

Prayer: Jesus, "God-with-us",  please help us become more aware of your presence in our lives
