 Reading - Reflection - Prayer   June 3, 2013
With readers' comments, below

Reading:  Jeremiah 16, 17

The Lord will bring back Israel's exiles,
back to the land he gave to our ancestors.

Lord, my strength, my stronghold,
all the nations will come to you
and acknowledge that you alone are God in all the earth.

Reflection:
In the midst of his personal troubles, and in the midst of his nation's problems, Jeremiah kept looking at the big picture,
realising all peoples are God's children, all nations need to love the Lord.

Prayer:
Lord, please help me keep an eye on the big picture....and not just focus on personal/local issues

Reading:   Psalm 90

O Lord you have been our refuge
from one generation to the next.

Before the earth or the world existed,
you are God, without beginning or end.

For you, a thousand years are like yesterday,
come and gone so quickly.

We humans have a short life,
our life is over like a sigh.

Our span is 70 years,
or 80 for those who are strong.

Make us know the shortness of our life,
that we may gain wisdom of heart.

In the morning, fill us with your love.
Give success to the work of our hands.

Reflection:
This psalm does some deep thinking about the meaning of life, the big picture.

Prayer: Lord, help us realize the shortness of our life,  that we may live our lives more wisely

Reading:  Acts 24-25

For the journey to Rome, Paul and some other prisoners were put in the custody of a soldier named Julius.

After sailing for one day, we arrived at the city of Sidon, where Julius kindly allowed Paul to meet with some friends

Then we sailed past Cyprus and reached the city of Myra in Lycia, where we changed to a ship bound for Italy

The wind was against us near Crete. We struggled along the coast to a place called Fair Havens

Reflection:
Several times the New Testament favourably mentions Romans - e.g. the centurion who helped build a synagogue.
The fair-mindedness of people like that centurion, and Julius (above) brings out the good side of the Roman Empire

Prayer:
Jesus, help prison guards to be kind like Julius

Reading: Matthew 28

Jesus died on Friday afternoon.
Early on Sunday morning, two women went to Jesus' tomb.

Suddenly there was a violent earthquake, and an angel from heaven
came and rolled away the big stone at the tomb's entrance.
The guards at the tomb were terrified of the angel.

The angel said to the women "Do not be afraid. I know you are looking for Jesus who was crucified.
He is not here. He has risen from the dead. Go and tell his disciples he has risen from the dead and will see them in Galilee".

The women were filled with joy and ran to tell this news to the disciples.
As they left the tomb area, Jesus himself appeared to them and said  "Do not be afraid.
Go and tell the disciples they must go to Galilee. They will see me there".

Reflection:
The two women were Mary Magdalene and another Mary (not Jesus' mother).  They were privileged to be the first apostles of the Resurrection,
for which Mary Magdalene is sometimes called the apostle of the apostles

Prayer: Jesus, may women be given more apostolic responsibility in the Church
