 Reading - Reflection - Prayer   May 24, 2013
With readers' comments, below

Reading:  Genesis 3

A creature hostile to God took the form of a snake
and tempted the first man and first woman.

The snake tempted them to disobey God.
The man and woman then disobeyed God.

When God asked them why they disobeyed him,
the man blamed the woman, and the woman blamed the snake.

God said to the snake:
"You are the enemy of the human race.
Someday a member of the human race will defeat you."

God said to the man and woman:
"From dust you came  and to dust you will return."

The first man's name was Adam (meaning "man").
The first woman's name was Eve (meaning "life").

Reflection:
Mary is the new Eve, whose obedience helps prepare for the new Adam, Jesus

Prayer: Jesus, new Adam, please protect us from the influence of evil

Reading:  Psalm 103

My soul, give thanks to the Lord.
All my being, bless his holy name.

My soul, give thanks to the Lord
and never forget all his blessings.

It is he who forgives all your guilt,
who heals every one of your ills.

It is he who fills your life with good things,
renewing your youth like an eagle's life.

The Lord is compassion and love,
slow to anger and rich in mercy.

As the heavens are high above the earth
so strong is his love for those who fear him.

As far as the East is from the West,
so far does he remove our sins.

As a father has compassion on his sons,
the Lord has pity on all who love and honor him.

Give thanks to the Lord, all his angels,
who heed the voice of his word.

Give thanks to the Lord, everyone and everything.
My soul, give thanks to the Lord!

Reflection:
This psalm is similar to the great prayer of Mary, The Magnificat, with its words "My soul glorifies the Lord"

Prayer: Lord, with Mary we praise and thank you for all your love in our lives

Reading:  Ephesians 3

This is what I pray, kneeling before the Father from whom
every family, whether spiritual or natural, takes it name:

May he give you  power through his Spirit
for your hidden self to grow strong

May Christ live in your hearts through faith

Planted in love and built on love, may you continually focus
on the love of Christ, until your life if filled with that love

Reflection:
Mary's wish for all her children: become more like Jesus

Prayer:
Jesus, please help us become more like you. Please live in our hearts

Reading:  Luke 8

Jesus' mother and his brothers came looking for him.
They could not get to him because of the crowd

Jesus was told "Your mother and brothers want to see you"

Jesus replied "My mother and brothers are people who hear the word of God and put it into practice"

Reflection:
"Behold the handmaid of the Lord, be it done unto me according to your word" said Mary to the angel.
Mary put God's word into practice.

Prayer: Jesus, please help me put your word into practice in my daily life
