 Reading - Reflection - Prayer   May 10, 2013
With readers' comments, below

Reading:  Isaiah 57, 58

Tell my people their faults,
tell the House of Jacob its sins.

Tell them that their fasting is a sham.
Fasting and injustice cannot go together.

This is the sort of fast that pleases the Lord:
breaking unjust fetters,
sharing your bread with the hungry
sheltering and clothing the homeless poor.

Do this and you will find healing and peace.
Do this and the Lord will give strength to your bones.

Reflection:
This is the sort of reading that should give us a lot of energy as we hear Pope Francis challenge us to do more for the poor

Prayer: Lord, please help me do more to help poor people

Reading:  Psalm 78

Listen, everyone, to my teaching.
I will recount the lessons of our history.

The things  our parents have told us,
we will not hide from our children,
but will pass them on to the next generation.

We want the next generation to know
all that the Lord has done for us in the past.

May the next generation in turn
pass on this knowledge to their own children,
so that they too will put their hope in God
and never forget all that God has done for us.

May future generations not be like our ancestors
who so often were unfaithful to God.

Even though our ancestors had seen God part the sea,
even though they had seen him provide food and water for them
in the desert, still they went on sinning.

Yet he who is full of compassion forgave and spared them.
He remembered they were only weak humans.

Eventually he brought them to the promised land
and gave a home to each of Israel's tribes.

But still they sinned by building mountain shrines
and serving idols.

Then God raised up David to be their leader.
God called him from looking after sheep
to be the shepherd of his people.

Reflection:
The basic responsibility of parents and teachers:
to pass on the knowledge of God to the next generation

Prayer:
Lord, help us to pass on the knowledge of your love to the next generation

Reading:  Acts 20

Paul continued "Now you see me a prisoner already in spirit.
I am on my way to Jerusalem, and have no idea what will happen to me there.
The Holy Spirit has made it clear that imprisonment and persecution await me there

But life to me is not a thing to waste words on.
What matters is that when I finish my race, I have carried out the mission the Lord Jesus gave me
- to bear witness to the Good News of God's grace"

Reflection:
When I see hundreds of men in prisons each week, I think "what a waste of life"....so sad these men are not outside in employment, looking after their families etc

Prayer:
Jesus, please help me live a worthwhile life. Don't let me waste my life

Reading:  Matthew 26

On Passover Eve, Jesus ate a last meal with his apostles.
While they were eating, Jesus told them he knew he would be betrayed by one of them.
He told Judas he knew he was the betrayer.

Then Jesus took some bread, blessed it and gave it to his apostles saying
"Take this and eat it. This is my body".

Then he took a cup of wine, blessed it and gave it to them saying
"Take this and drink it. This is my blood".

Reflection:
The Body and Blood of Jesus, Communion, the Mass, the Eucharist
 - the source and summit of the Christian faith

Prayer: Jesus, please help me understand how bread and wine become your body and blood when Christians celebrate the Eucharist
