 Reading - Reflection - Prayer   April 27, 2013
With readers' comments, below

Reading:  Isaiah 36-40

"Console my people, console them" says the Lord.

A voice cries out "Prepare in the wilderness a way for the Lord.
Make a straight highway for our God across every desert.

Let every valley be filled in,
every mountain and hill be laid low.

Then the glory of the Lord shall be revealed
and all people will see the Lord's glory."

Go up on a high mountain,
joyful messenger to Zion.

Shout with a loud voice,
joyful messenger to Jerusalem.

Shout to the towns of Judah
"Here is your God".

Reflection:
YouTube: Prepare ye the way of the Lord

Prayer:  Jesus, please help me prepare your way in my heart, in  my family, in my world

Reading:  Psalms 49, 50

I will turn my mind to a parable,
with the harp I will solve a problem.

The problem is: why do bad people prosper and succeed?

The answer: at the end of their lives bad people will have to face death and judgement, just like everyone else.

When we are rich, we often lack wisdom.
Wealth blinds our minds and hearts.

Let's not forgot God and his laws.
Let's try to be good and lead good lives

Reflection:
Bad people's prosperity is false prosperity.
It's more like a bad debt growing "badder" each day.
It's held not in US$ but in Hell$.
In the end: bankruptcy....

Prayer: Lord, please help me better understand that the only real success and only real prosperity is held in Heaven$....by love of you and help to others

Reading:  Acts 17

Paul continued speaking to the intellectuals:
"We have no excuse for thinking that the Creator looks like something carved in gold, silver or stone

God overlooked that sort of thing when we were ignorant.
But now he is telling everyone to repent and believe in Jesus raised from the dead"

Some intellectuals laughed at Paul. A few became believers

Reflection:
Paul was laughed at (above).
Jesus was laughed at (when he said the little girl was asleep, not dead).
Let's remember Jesus and Paul when we are laughed out for upholding God's values

Prayer:
Jesus, please give intellectuals the humility to believe in you

Reading:  Matthew 20

The brothers James and John were two of Jesus' disciples.
One day their mother said to Jesus
"When you become king, allow my sons to sit at your right and left".

Jesus said to James and John
"Only my Father in heaven can allocate seats on my right and left".

The 10 other disciples were angry at James and John for seeking honor.  So Jesus said to them all

"In most places, people in power like to dominate and control others.
But this is not to be your way of exercising authority.

You must exercise authority by serving others, not dominating them,
just as the Son of Man came not to be served, but to serve,
and to give his life as a ransom for the world".

Reflection:
May all leaders - teachers, work supervisors, clergy, politicians - want to serve rather than to be served,
i.e. consider the interests of those in their charge, rather than their own interests

Prayer:

Jesus, please help me want to help and serve other people, not dominate and control them
