 Reading - Reflection - Prayer   April 22, 2013
With readers' comments, below

Reading:  Isaiah 26, 27

Trust in the Lord for ever,
for the Lord is an everlasting Rock.

Lord, we trust in you, we hope in you.
At night our hearts long for you.

Lord, when we shelter under your protection
you give us peace.

Reflection:
Night time....sleep time....a special time of longing for God.
As one of the psalms says: "I muse on you through the night".
When we awake during sleep time....that's a good time to pray...for someone who is sick or some place that needs help (like Sichuan after the recent earthquake) ....such a prayer is a help to someone else...and helps us get back to sleep!

Prayer: Lord, please help us "muse on you through the night"

Psalm 41

Blessed the person who helps the poor and the weak.
He himself will be helped by the Lord when he is sick and in trouble.

The Lord will help him on his bed of pain.
The Lord will bring him back from sickness to health.

Reflection:
Helping the poor is good for ....our health!

Prayer: Lord, please help me to do more for the poor

Reading:  Acts 16

Late that night in prison, Paul and Silas were praying and singing God's praises,
while the other prisoners listened to them

Suddenly there was an earthquake that shook the prison.
All the doors opened, and the chains fell from all the prisoners

The main jailer drew his sword and was about to kill himself,
thinking the prisoners had escaped

But Paul shouted to him "Don't hurt yourself. We are all still here"

Trembling, the jailer threw himself at the feet of Paul and Silas.
Then he escorted them out of the prison asking "What must I do to be saved?"

They said "Become a believer in the Lord Jesus, and both you and your household will be saved"

They explained the word of God to him and his family.
He washed their wounds and then they "washed his wounds" by baptizing him and all his household

They had a meal together in the jailer's home, to celebrate the family's conversion to belief in God

Reflection:
Stories like this make us ask:
does a person really need a 12-18 month instruction course in order to be baptized?

Prayer:
Jesus, let more people know the joy of conversion

Reading:  Matthew 19

Some people brought their little children to Jesus.
They hoped Jesus would  put his hands on the children and bless them.

Jesus' disciples told the people to go away and not bother Jesus.
But Jesus' said "Don't prevent the little children from coming to me".

Then he put his hands on them and blessed them.

Reflection:
Some people say "wait till children grow up and let them decide for themselves if they'd like to be Christians".
To such parents Jesus says "Don't prevent the children from coming to me"

Prayer: Jesus, please help all children to know you from their earliest days.
Please don't let parents prevent children from coming to you.
