 Reading - Reflection - Prayer   March 23, 2013
With readers' comments, below

Reading:  Sirach 51

When I was young, before I became a traveler,
I prayed for wisdom.

Thanks to wisdom, I have been successful in my work.
And so I finish this book by praising the God who gave me wisdom:

I give thanks to you, Lord and King,
and praise you, God my savior.

For by wisdom you have protected and supported me,
and rescued me from so many troubles.

I will praise you all my days
and gratefully sing your praises.

Reflection:
This final reading from Sirach encourages us to pray for wisdom every day of our life
...e.g. first thing in the morning, while washing face...water = Holy Spirit...."Come Holy Spirit...
...grant that we may be always truly wise"

Prayer: Lord, thank you for the wisdom in this book. Please give us wisdom for each day

Psalm 23

The Lord is my shepherd, there is nothing I shall want.
Fresh and green are the pastures where he gives me repose.
Near restful waters he leads me, to revive my drooping spirit.

He guides me along the right path. He is true to his name.
If I should walk in the valley of darkness no evil would I fear.
You are there with your crook and your staff; with these you give me comfort.

You have prepared a banquet for me in the sight of my foes.
My head you have anointed with oil. My cup is overflowing.

Surely goodness and kindness shall follow me all the days of my life.
In the Lord's own house shall I dwell for ever and ever.

Reflection:
Tomorrow is Palm Sunday...the start of Holy Week.
Jesus would have prayed the above psalm with special meaning during his last week
as he entered the valley of darkness

Prayer: Jesus, when we seem to be entering a valley of darkness, please help us remember your presence

Reading:  Acts 12

About this time, King Herod began persecuting the church.
He beheaded the apostle James, brother of John. He arrested Peter during Passover time.
He put Peter in prison and planned to have him put on trial and killed after Passover

Each day Peter was in prison, the believers stormed heaven praying for him.
On the night before he was to be put on trial, Peter was sleeping between two soldiers,
fastened with chains, with more soldiers at the prison entrance

Suddenly Peter's cell was filled with light, and an angel told him to get up.
The chains fell from his hands. The angel led Peter out of the prison,
without the guards knowing what was happening

Peter then left for another place. Herod was unable to find him

Reflection:
Readings like this encourage us to remember people in prison....many millions of them around the world
...especially those in prison for their beliefs or for standing up for human rights

Prayer:
Jesus, please help people who are in prison as a result of persecution

Reading:  Matthew 14

After feeding the crowd with 5 loaves and 2 fish,
Jesus told his disciples to go by boat across the nearby lake.

Jesus stayed to send the crowds away.
Then he went up into the hills to pray.

When darkness came, the boat was far from land,
but it was battling large waves caused by a strong head-wind.

Jesus then walked on the water towards the boat.
He called out to his disciples "Courage. It is I. Don't be afraid."

Peter answered "Lord, if it is you, tell me to walk on the water to you."  Jesus said "Come".

Peter then started walking on the water,
but he became afraid and began to sink.

"Lord, save me" he called out.
Jesus took him by the hand and helped him to keep walking on the water.

"Man of little faith, why did you doubt?" asked Jesus.
As they got into the boat, the wind stopped.

The men in the boat bowed to Jesus and said
"You really are the Son of God".

Reflection:
"Why did you doubt?" ....would that we had more faith and trust in God ...and in other people

Prayer: Jesus, please give me more faith and trust in you ...and in others
