 Reading - Reflection - Prayer   March 20, 2013
With readers' comments, below

Reading:  Sirach 40-41

Wine and music cheer the heart,
but better than wine and music is the love of wisdom.

Do not speak sharply to people.
Do not ignore people who greet you.

Do not gaze at another man's wife.
Do not carry on with a single girl.

Reflection:
The more we follow Wisdom's advice, the better our world will be, the happier we will be.
The less we follow Wisdom's advice, the worse our world will be, the unhappier we will be

Prayer: Lord, please help me control my speech and my eyes

Psalm 19

The heavens proclaim the glory of God,
the starry skies are the work of his hands.

The stars can't speak, but they are  God's handwriting.
The sun is God's love shining on  the whole world.

The universe is a masterpiece, and so is God's law
which shines in our hearts.

The precepts of the Lord enlighten our lives each day.
The law of the Lord gives joy and wisdom to our hearts.

The decrees of the Lord are to be desired more than gold,
they are sweeter than honey, than honey from the comb.

But  often we are unaware of  our errors.
Lord, please protect us from making mistakes.

Reflection:
This psalm is about the sun and about the law.
It can be called  "the sun-in-law psalm"!
(I'm not sure which, if any, psalms qualify as "daughter/mother/father-in-law" psalms).
Once again we remember the famous words of Immanuel Kant:
"Two things awe me most: the starry sky above me and the moral law within me"

Prayer:  Lord, may the words of my mouth and the thoughts of my heart  be pleasing to you

Reading:  Acts 9

Peter visited churches in many areas. When he went to Lydda,
he saw a man named Aeneas, a paralytic who had been bed-ridden for 8 years

Peter said to him "Aeneas, Jesus Christ cures you.
Get up and fold up your sleeping mat"

Aeneas got up immediately. The people of that area who saw him, were converted to the Lord

Reflection:
How many dozens of "paralytics" we know.
Would that we had the faith of Peter to pray for them

Prayer:
Jesus, let there be more miracles of healing, so that more people will believe in you

Reading:  Matthew 13

One day Jesus went to Nazareth, his home town.
In the prayer hall there he taught the local people.

But the local people would not accept him.  They said
"Where did he get such  wisdom and miraculous power?
He is just a carpenter's son. His mother is that woman called Mary.

His brothers are James, Joseph, Simon and Jude.
His sisters are here, too.  He's nobody special."

Jesus said to them
"A prophet is despised only in his own country and his own house.".

And he did not work many miracles there because of their lack of faith.

Reflection:
One main reason for lack of miracles: lack of faith.
Lack of faith prevented even Jesus from doing miracles
....lack of faith is like a wall or roadblock, stopping God's love from entering our hearts

Prayer: Jesus, please give me more faith in you ....and don't let me reject people
