 Reading - Reflection - Prayer   March 15, 2013
With readers' comments, below

Reading:  Sirach 32-34

If you are chosen for an important job,
don't let it go to your head.

When you speak, keep to the point.
Say much in a few words.

Reflect before you act.
Look before you leap.

Travel broadens the mind.
Ask God's protection when you travel

Reflection:
Pope Francis is a humble man. He would like the above words.
May we also like and practise the above words

Prayer: Lord, please protect Pope Francis.
May his humble example change the world around him, rather than the world around him change him

Psalms  14-15

So many people live and act as if God doesn't exist.
Some foolish people even say there is no God.

So many people have left the way of justice and truth.
So many people follow the way of falsehood.

Lord, help us to live as we should.
Help us not to slander, help us not to wrong others.

Reflection:
Only foolish people would say they never had any human parents.
Only foolish people say that this beautiful universe had no Creator.
Once you say "there's no God", then there's no reason for trying to live a good life

Prayer: Lord, we believe....and rely on your grace to follow the way of justice and truth

Reading:  Acts 8

The apostles in Jerusalem heard that people in Samaria had accepted the word of God.
Peter and John went to Samaria to pray for the Samaritans to receive the Holy Spirit.

So far the Samaritans had only been baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus.
The Holy Spirit had not come down on them

When Peter and John prayed over them with the laying on of hands, the Samaritans received the Holy Spirit

Reflection:
Baptism is like a down-payment, a deposit of the Holy Spirit.
Confirmation is when we receive the full installment.
The Samaritans had received only a deposit. Then when Peter and John prayed over them, they received the total amount

Prayer:
Come Holy Spirit. Come down on me. Please help me understand the sacraments of Baptism and Confirmation

Reading:  Matthew 13

One day Jesus told the people this story:

A farmer was planting seeds in his field.
Some seeds fell on the path. Birds ate them.

Some seeds fell on rocky ground.
They became sickly plants, without roots, and died.

Some seeds fell among thorns.
When they became plants, they were choked by the thorns.

Some seeds fell on good soil
and produced a rich harvest.

People who hear God's word without good will
are like the seeds on the path.
They are easy prey for Satan.

People who hear God's word only superficially
are like the seeds on rocky ground.
As soon as difficulties come, such people easily give up.

People who hear God's word with one ear
but with the other listen to the call of greed and pleasure
are like the seeds among thorns. Greed kills the word.

People who hear God's word with good will and put it into practice
are like the good seeds which produced a rich harvest.

Reflection:
Four types of ground, four types of people  .... four different results

Prayer: Jesus, please help me be good seed!
