 Reading - Reflection - Prayer   March 4, 2013
With readers' comments, below

Reading:  Sirach 4-5

Water puts out a fire. Almsgiving makes up for sins.
Do not refuse to help a poor person.

Some people are all talk and no action.
Some people are lions at home but sheep in society.

Do not give your heart to money.
Do not let  passion rule your life.

Be quick to listen, but slow to speak.
Keep your temper under control.

Reflection:
The older we get, the more we are willing to try to put the above words into practice.
The older we get, the more we see the wisdom and value of the above words.
The older we get, the more we wish we'd put the above words into practice more often when we were younger

Prayer: Lord, please help me put the above words into practice....each day for the rest of my life

Psalms 149-150

Sing a new song to the Lord.
Let the praise of God be always on our lips.

Praise God in his holy temple.
Praise him in the heavens.

O praise him with sound of trumpet.
Praise him with lute and harp.

Praise him with drums and dancing.
Praise him with strings and pipes.

Let everything that lives and breathes,
give praise to the Lord our Creator.  Alleluia!

Reflection:
Sometimes in a big church they have not just an organ, but drums, trumpets and other instruments
...and the effect is just mind-blowing...and takes the praise in our hearts to a higher level

Prayer: Lord, may there often be more musical instruments in church to help us praise you

Reading:  Acts 4

The apostles continued to witness to the resurrection of the Lord Jesus with great power

The whole group of believers was united, heart and soul.
They willingly shared everything they had with people who were in need

Joseph was a Temple minister who had been born in Cyprus.
He sold a field  he owned, and gave the proceeds to the apostles.
The apostles called him "Barnabas" ("Son of Encouragement")

Reflection:
"Great power" here means miracles of healing. May they happen more often in our modern world.
"Shared everything": may Christians do more for the poor in our modern world

Prayer: Jesus, help me to be more caring and sharing

Reading:  Matthew 9

A prayer hall official came to Jesus and said
"My daughter has just died. Please come and lay your hand on her
and she will come back to life".

As Jesus and his friends were following the official to his home,
a woman who had a hemorrhage for 12 years
came up behind Jesus and touched his clothing.

The woman had said to herself
"If I can even touch his clothing, I will be healed".

Jesus knew what she was doing and said to her
"My daughter, your faith has healed you".
Instantly she was healed.

When Jesus arrived at the official's house
he saw a crowd of people crying loudly.

Jesus said to them "Get out of the house. The little girl is asleep , not dead".  The crowd laughed at Jesus.

After the crowd had gone outside, Jesus went inside.
He took the little girl by the hand, and she stood up.

News of what had happened spread all round the district.

Reflection:
When people laughed at him, Jesus didn't say "Well, if that's how you feel, I'm out of here".
He just went on ministering, despite insults and mockery

Prayer: Jesus, please help me keep going, even when people insult or mock me
