 Reading - Reflection - Prayer   March 1, 2013
With readers' comments, below

Reading:  Wisdom 10-19

Wisdom has been present in the world since the beginning of time.
Wisdom has always been a close friend of good people.

Wise people see God in the beauty of creation.
Foolish people are blind to God's presence in creation.

Wise people ponder God's goodness and kindness.
Wise people  try to be good and kind to other people.

Reflection:
How often do I pass a garden, park, lake, river
....and never think of the One who made them and in whom they exist?

Prayer: Lord, may the beauty of this world remind me of you

Psalm 147

Praise the Lord for he is good.
Sing to our God for he is loving.
To him our praise is due.

The Lord builds up Jerusalem
and brings back Israel's exiles.

He heals the broken-hearted
and binds up all their wounds.

The Lord raises the lowly
and humbles the wicked.

He fixes the number of the stars.
He calls each one by name.

Our Lord is great and almighty.
His wisdom can never be measured.

He covers the heavens with clouds.
He prepares rain for the earth,

making mountains sprout with grass
and with plants to serve our needs.

His delight is not in horses
nor his pleasure in warriors' strength.

The Lord delights in those who love and honor him,
in those who wait for his love.

Reflection:
Many people who have had a "near death experience" describe the overpowering feeling of knowing that they are known and loved by the Creator of the universe. We don't need to have one foot in the grave to start understanding this wonderful fact

Prayer: God of the universe, please help me think more about your love for me

Reading:  Acts 4

The religious leaders were astonished that two uneducated men like Peter and John could speak so confidently.
The leaders also realized that a miracle had taken place: the crippled man was standing next to  Peter and John

The leaders gave Peter and John a formal legal warning not to speak in future about Jesus

Peter and John replied "Which is right? To obey you, or obey God?
We cannot stop proclaiming what we have seen and heard"

The leaders released the two apostles.
They were afraid to punish them since all the people were giving glory to God for the miracle that had happened

Reflection:
Obeying the voice of God in our hearts might sometimes mean not obeying the voice of this world's religious leaders

Prayer: Jesus, please help me always hear and obey your voice in my heart

Reading:  Matthew 9

One day when Jesus was walking past a customs house
he said to a tax collector  named Matthew "Follow me".
Matthew got up and followed Jesus.

Matthew invited Jesus and Jesus' friends to a dinner in his house.
Some tax collectors and  "bad" people sat at Jesus' table.

Religious leaders saw this and complained to Jesus' friends
"Why does your master eat with tax collectors and bad people?"

Jesus' answer was
"It is not the healthy who need the doctor, but the sick.

Go and think about the Bible words
'What I want is mercy, not sacrifice'.
I have a special concern for rejects and down-and-outs."

Reflection:
How much do today's religious leaders mix with society's "down and outs"?

Prayer: Jesus, please help religious leaders in today's world to care more about people who are rejected by society
