 Reading - Reflection - Prayer   Feb 18, 2013
With readers' comments, below

Reading:  Ecclesiastes 10-11

Foolish people are lazy,  and careless in speech.
Wise people are diligent, and careful in speech.

Young people, rejoice in your youth.
Young people, remember your Creator in the days of your youth.

Let everyone remember: our life is short.
Don't waste your life. Live life well.

Our days pass quickly
and old age is soon at the doorstep.

Old age: when to go uphill is difficult
and even walking is not easy.

In all we do, let us love and honor the Lord our God.
At the end of our lives on earth, it is to God we will have to give an account of the way we have lived.

Reflection:
Old age at the doorstep! Yes!  Where did it come from?! And it seems to have come so quickly!
May whatever days/weeks/months/years/decades are left.....be lived as well and wisely!

Prayer: Lord, make us know the shortness of our life so that we may have more wisdom in living our lives

Reading: Psalm 134

O come, bless the Lord,
all you who serve the Lord,

who stand in the house of the Lord,
in the courts of the house of our God.

Lift up your hands to heaven
and bless the Lord through the night.

May the Lord bless you from Zion,
he who made both heaven and earth.

Reflection:
The above words were for those who served in the Temple.
But all people, especially all believers, can "bless the Lord through the night"
....certainly last thing before sleep we can pray:

Prayer: Lord, please  protect my family tonight and every night

Reading:  Acts 1

On the day he was taken up to heaven, Jesus said to his apostles
"You will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes on you. Then you will be my witnesses in every part of the world"

As he said this, he was lifted up while they watched.
A
cloud took him from their sight

Then two angels appeared to them and said "Jesus who has been taken up from you, will come back some day in the same way as you have seen him leave"

Reflection:
Not Qantas, or Cathay Pacific, or United, or BA - but Holy Spirit Airways was the way Jesus travelled:
As God the Son, he came to Mary's womb by the Holy Spirit. He went back to heaven by the same Holy Spirit ("a cloud").
At the end of the world he'll come again "in the same way"...by the Holy Spirit

Prayer: Jesus, guide us by your Holy Spirit to be your witnesses by the way we think and speak and live

Reading:  Matthew 5

Jesus said to the crowds:

You are the salt of the earth.
But if salt loses its taste, it's no use for anything.

You are the light of the world.
Let the world see your light, your good deeds.

When people see you doing good deeds,
people will praise God.

I have not come to abolish the Jewish religion.
I have come to raise it to a higher level of goodness.

Your goodness must not just be something superficial.
Your goodness must be something from the heart.

You must avoid anger and insult, just like you avoid murder.
If you have offended someone, say "Sorry".

You must avoid lustful looks and thoughts.
Looking at someone lustfully is immorality of the heart.

Love and pray for people who are unkind to you.
This is the way to practise the highest level of goodness.

Reflection:
Students learning the piano can go from level one to level 10.
Christians practising goodness can go from level one to perfection (Jesus' recommended target!)

Prayer: Jesus,  please help me practise a higher level of goodness
