 Reading - Reflection - Prayer   Feb 16, 2013
With readers' comments, below

Reading:  Ecclesiastes 8-9

I see injustice in the world:
good people are treated badly; bad people are treated well.

I do know, however,
that good people are in the special care of God.

We must try to be happy as much as we can.
We must try to make the most of our lives.

Spend your life with the woman you love.
Whatever work you have to do, do it well.

Reflection:
St Paul has words similar to the above:  "I want you to be happy", "Get a decent job and earn your living" etc
A beautiful old song: Do what you do, do well

Prayer: Lord, please help me to be optimistic and cheerful

Reading: Psalm 133

How good and how pleasant it is
when people live in unity.

It is like precious oil upon the head,
running down upon the beard.

It is like the dew of Hermon
which falls on the heights of Zion.

For there the Lord gives his blessing,
life for ever.

Reflection:
When a family, a group of friends, a work group, a team of volunteers, any group....is united and peaceful....what a blessing!

Prayer: Dear Lord, please help all the peoples of the world to live as one family, in unity.

Reading:  Acts 1

Dear Friend of God, in my first book I wrote about everything Jesus did until the day he was taken up to heaven.

For 40 days after his death, he appeared to his apostles many times, and taught them about the kingdom of God

He told them to stay in Jerusalem and wait for what the Father had promised:
"You will soon be baptized with the Holy Spirit"

Reflection:
We know that the Holy Spirit overshadowed Mary to conceive Jesus. We know that Mary was with the Pentecost group that was filled with the Holy Spirit. The Holy Spirit "filled" Mary more than once. Same for us: a first fill at Baptism, a powerful fill at Confirmation....and we can pray everyday for a top-up!

Prayer: Jesus, please baptize me with the Holy Spirit.  Holy Spirit,  increase your influence in my life

Reading:  Matthew 5

Jesus said to the crowds:

Blessed are poor and simple of heart  people.
They belong to the kingdom of heaven .

Blessed are people who are going through great sorrow.
Their hearts will be filled with peace.

Blessed are people who lead just and honest lives.
They will see the victory of goodness.

Blessed are people who show mercy to others.
God will be merciful to them.

Blessed are people who have a clean heart.
They will see God.

Blessed are people who are peacemakers.
They are God's children.

Blessed are people who are persecuted for the cause of right.
They will receive a great reward in heaven.

Reflection:
The "Beatitudes" above are like the Ten Commandments re-written for adults

Prayer: Jesus, please help me be a "Beatitude" Christian, rather than a "Ten Commandments' Christian
