Readings for February 13, Ash Wednesday

First reading:  A call to fasting

Responsorial Psalm:  A sorrowful plea for mercy

Second reading:  A plea for reconciliation with God

Gospel:  Jesus' teaching re fasting

Reflection:
A few weeks ago I read that an Australian bishop has asked his people to fast and pray especially every Friday to make up for the sex abuse scandal.  This Lent is a time for the whole Church, especially us clergy, to use a bit more prayer and a bit of fasting as a way of saying sorry for all the bad things that have happened in the Church.
And during the coming month there's one more thing to pray and fast for: the election of a new pope....asking God that the new pope will help the Church get back to what Jesus wants it to be like.

Prayer
Jesus, during this Lent, and especially during the coming month, please help us to a little bit more praying and a bit of fasting for the two intentions above
