 Reading - Reflection - Prayer   Feb 12, 2013
With readers' comments, below

Reading:  Ecclesiastes 4-5

So many things we do are motivated by jealousy.

Two people working together can succeed.
One person alone is easily defeated.

It is better to be content with what you have,
than to be greedy for wealth.

Reflection:
"Be content with what you have":
Do I really need to buy the latest iPad every year?
Do I really need to buy so many clothes/shoes?
See what one couple did: Our Downsizing Story

Prayer: Lord, please help me to downsize!

Reading: Psalm 128

O blessed are those who fear the Lord and walk in his ways.

By the labor of your hands you shall eat.
You will be happy and prosper:

your wife like a fruitful vine in the heart of your house;
your children like shoots of the olive, around your table.

Indeed thus shall be blessed
the people who love and honor the Lord.

May the Lord bless you from Zion all the days of your life.
May you see your children's children in a happy Jerusalem!

On Israel, peace!

Reflection:
Whenever I officiate at a wedding, or whenever I send good wishes to people being married,
I use the beautiful blessing words of this psalm:
May you see your children's children!

Prayer: Dear Lord, may all married people  live to see their children's children

Reading:  Revelation 22

Then an angel showed me the River of Life,
flowing from the throne of God and of the Lamb,
flowing crystal-clear through the middle of the city

Here God's servants will worship him.
They will see him face to face,
and his name will be written on their foreheads

It will never be night again.
They will not need lamplight or sunlight,
because the Lord God will be shining on them

Reflection:
"The River of Life" means the Holy Spirit.
See this article to which can be added
John 7: "From his heart will flow fountains of living water"
John 19: From Jesus' pierced side came blood and water

Prayer: Jesus, may your Holy Spirit be poured over us, like water!

Reading:  Matthew 4

After he was baptized,
Jesus spent about 40 days praying and fasting in the desert.
During this time, he was tempted by Satan.

"If you are the Son of God,
change some stones into bread" said Satan.

Jesus replied "Human life needs more than bread.
Life needs God's message".

Satan then  took Jesus to a high place and said
"Throw yourself down, since the angels will protect you".

Jesus replied
"Presumption is a sin".

Then Satan  took Jesus to a high mountain
and showed him all the nations of the world.

"Worship me and I will give you all these nations" said Satan.

Jesus replied
"Go away, Satan!   Only God is to be worshipped".

The devil then went away.

Reflection:
The Holy Spirit is the River of Life. Satan is the River of Death.
The River of Life is clean, beautiful, refreshing, life-giving.
The River of Death is dirty, ugly, depressing, life-taking

Prayer: Jesus, by your Holy Spirit, River of Life, please protect us from Satan, River of Death
