 Reading - Reflection - Prayer   Feb 8, 2013
With readers' comments, below

Reading:  Ecclesiastes 1-2

Everything is temporary and  passing.
What's the use of all our toil?

Our life is over in a few days.
What's the use of all our toil?

The same fate awaits both wise person and fool.
Death is always just around the corner.

Reflection:
The above words sooner or later are in everyone's mind: what's the meaning of life?
Why are we here? Where did we come from? Is there a life after death?
c.f. this beautiful short piece
by Joseph Girzone

Prayer: Dear God, please help me understand the meaning of life.
Help me understand that there is life in heaven after life on earth

Reading: Psalm 126

When the Lord delivered Zion from bondage,
it seemed like a dream.

Then was our mouth filled with laughter,
on our lips there were songs.

What marvels the Lord worked for us.
Indeed we were glad.

Those who are sowing in tears
will sing when they reap.

They go out, full of tears, carrying seed for the sowing.
They come back, full of song, carrying their sheaves.

Reflection:
Two days ago I received a phone call from a man just out of prison. "I'm free!  I'm free!" he kept saying.
That's how the Jewish people felt when they were allowed to leave captivity in Babylon and return to their own land.
That's how addicts feel when they succeed in breaking an addiction.
That's how we'll all feel someday when we leave our captivity here on earth and return to our home in Heaven.

Prayer: Dear God, please free us from all bondage

Reading:  Revelation 21

Then the One sitting on the throne said
"Now I am making the whole of creation new.
I am the Beginning and the End

I give Eternal Life to all  who die in my friendship

But for those whose evil deeds have removed themselves from my friendship, there is Eternal Death"

Reflection:
As we learn more about the meaning of life, we come to understand there is a life after death,
in one of two places, Heaven or Hell. What does it profit us to gain the whole world but miss out on Eternal Life?
What is more important than helping other people to receive Eternal Life?

Prayer: Jesus, have mercy on people who are rejecting your friendship

Reading:  John 20-21

Jesus did many other things.  If all of them were written down,
so many books would be needed that no library could hold them all

This book has been written to help you believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God.
Through your faith in Jesus, may you have eternal life

Reflection:
Genuine faith in Jesus means we are already sharing in God's life here on earth,
and will share in it for all eternity in Heaven

Prayer:
Jesus, Son of God, thank you for John's Gospel.  May more and more people know you and love you
