 Reading - Reflection - Prayer   Feb 6, 2013
With readers' comments, below

Reading:  Proverbs 27-29

Do not boast about tomorrow,
since you do not know what will happen today.

Let others praise you,
but do not praise yourself.

Better open reproof
than voiceless love.

From one who loves, wounds are well-intentioned.
From one who hates, kisses are ominous.

He who admits his faults will prosper.
He who confesses and renounces his faults will find mercy.

A roaring lion, a hungry bear,
such is a bad ruler of a poor people.

Reflection:
To take just one idea from the above - a bad ruler of a poor people is like a roaring lion.
In 2,000 a North American newspaper had a headline Bad rulers rule poor people  for a report which said that good government was No. 1 priority for fighting poverty.
Which is why, for some years now, my final
prayer as I go to sleep is:

Dear Jesus, please give the world and the Church better leaders, for which I pray "Our Father...."

Reading: Psalm 124

"If the Lord had not been on our side",
this is Israel's song.

If the Lord had not been on our side
when people rose against us,

then would they have swallowed us alive
when they were angry with us.

Blessed be the Lord who did not let us become
a prey for their teeth.

Our life, like a bird, has escaped
from the snare of the hunter.

Indeed the snare has been broken
and we have escaped.

Our help is in the name of the Lord
who made heaven and earth.

Reflection:
Jesus helps us escape: from sorrow, from worry, from guilt, from anxiety, from sickness...and from death

Prayer: Thank you, Lord, for all the times you have rescued me from trouble

Reading:  Revelation 20

Then I saw God sitting on a great white throne

I saw the dead, both great and small, standing in front of his throne,
while the Book of Life was opened, in which was the record of everyone's life

Everyone was judged according to the way they had lived

Then Death and Hades were thrown into a burning lake.
This burning lake is the second death

Anyone whose name could not be found in the Book of Life
was thrown into the burning lake

Reflection:
Q: What book is even more important than the Bible?
A: The Book of Life !

Prayer: Jesus, may all near and dear to me, be in the Book of Life

Reading:  John 21

Jesus also appeared to the disciples at the Sea of Galilee, when Peter, John and 5 other disciples were fishing.
They had spent all night in their boat, but had caught nothing

In the morning, Jesus stood on the shore, though the disciples did not recognize him.
He called out "Lower your net on the right side of the boat"

Immediately the net filled with fish. John realized that the man on the shore was Jesus.
John said to Peter "It is the Lord", and they returned to the shore, which was only about 100 meters away.
The net had 153 big fish, but did not break

Jesus had prepared some bread. He also had some fish cooking on a charcoal fire.
He said "Come and have breakfast"

Reflection:
When I was a boy I often went fishing. But it was no fun often to return home without even one fish!
No fish, no fun!
And what was the first Christians' favorite symbol for Jesus?  A fish! ...which is why you often see a fish displayed on cars and in homes/shops of Christians today!  (Church is a fishmarket!)

Prayer: Jesus, Risen Lord, without you, no fish. With you, 153 fish.
Please help me be more aware of your presence in my life
