 Reading - Reflection - Prayer   Feb 1, 2013
With readers' comments, below

Reading:  Proverbs 19-22

Where reflection is wanting, zeal is not good.
People who go too quickly  miss their way.

Whoever is kind to the poor is kind to the Lord.
The Lord will repay such kindness.

Children at play
show what sort of people they will be in the future.

Better the corner of a loft to live in
than a house shared with a scolding spouse.

Better to live in a desert land
than with a scolding and irritable spouse.

Instruct children in goodness and justice
and they will always be  good adults.

Reflection:
Yet again, so much good advice in every line!
How many times we make mistakes by "going too quickly" (line 2)

Prayer: Lord, please help me put into practice the ideas in these words. Please especially help me go more slowly and carefully!

Reading: Psalm 120

I call to the  Lord in the hour of my distress:
"Lord save me from people who speak with lying lips".

Long enough have I been dwelling with those who hate peace.
I am for peace, but they are for fighting.

I lift up my eyes to the mountains.
From where shall come my help?

My help shall come from the Lord
who made heaven and earth.

The Lord is our guard and our shade.
Day and night we shall not be afraid.

The Lord will guard our going and coming
both now and forever.

Reflection:
Day and night God is our help. Always on duty.
Someone joked that in order to have a rest, Father, Son and Holy Spirit each do 8-hour shifts! But their help for us is like that of a mother for her baby: 24/7 when needed

Prayer: Lord, please protect us from danger, day and night

Reading:  Revelation 15

Then I saw something great and wonderful:
those who had fought against the beast and won,
were singing the Song of the Lamb:

"Great and wonderful are all your works,
Lord God almighty.
Just and true are all your ways,
King of nations.
All nations will come and adore you"

Reflection:
Top of the hit parade, No. 1 song in Heaven:
The Song of the Lamb!

Prayer: Jesus, may all the nations of the earth adore you

Reading:  John 20

Before dawn the next morning, Sunday, Mary Magdalene went to the tomb.
She saw the stone had been moved from the tomb's entrance

She ran to Peter and John and said "Someone has taken the Lord out of the tomb"

They ran back to the tomb. Peter went in first.
He saw that the linen cloths were on the ground.
But the cloth that had been around Jesus' head was not on the ground.
It was neatly folded and in a place by itself

Then John went into the tomb. He saw, and he believed

Reflection:
John's moment of belief was when he saw the head cloth.
Our moments of belief happen all the time:
- the sight of a glorious sunrise or sunset or rainbow or mountain or ocean
- the sight of a new-born baby
- a time of prayer

Prayer: Jesus, thank you for moments of belief
