Readings
for January 20, the 2nd Sunday of Ordinary Time
First reading: Not
just a bride and groom reading, to go with the Gospel,
but a reading which says that God rejoices over us like a bridegroom rejoices
over his bride
Responsorial Psalm:
All brides need to know about their Heavenly Bridegroom
Second reading: The gifts of the Holy Spirit, intended for the benefit of all brides
Gospel: 150 gallons of water changed to wine
Reflection:
If the guests had already finished the supply of wine,
they must have been well inebriated, maybe some of them were "under the
influence". But Jesus did not say "no more...you've had
enough...some of you are already drunk". Rather he gave them more wine, of
a higher quality!...rather than have the host family lose face for running out
of wine. For Jesus, the young couple's embarrassment was a higher priority issue
than the guests' drunkenness! No doubt at the back of his mind Jesus had
the words of the psalm: "you gave us wine to cheer our hearts"
Prayer:
Jesus, please help us better understand
how your love for us like that of bridegroom for his bride. And help us
establish priorities with your heart!
