R-R-P  Reading - Reflection - Prayer   Jan 18, 2013
With readers' comments, below

Reading:  Proverbs 6

Idler, go to the ant.  Ponder her ways and grow wise.
No one gives her orders, yet she makes sure of her food.

Night and day you spend so much time sleeping.
In no time poverty and want will be at your pillow.

Avoid deceitful people, those who have leering lips,
winking eyes, shuffling feet, beckoning fingers.

Avoid people with a haughty look
and people who sow dissension.

Do not desire the beauty of your neighbour's wife.
Adultery means trouble and disgrace.

Reflection:
Every line of the above has good advice (= wisdom).
This is the sort of stuff students should be learning at school.
Maths and science and languages important...yes...but far more important
is the science of life, especially the science of being a good person

Prayer: Dear God, please give us the wisdom to put the above words into practice

Reading:  Psalm 108

My heart is ready, O God. I will sing, sing your praise.
Awake, lyre and harp. I will awake the dawn.

I will thank you, Lord, among the peoples,
praise you among the nations,

for your love reaches to the heavens
and your truth to the skies.

O Lord, come and deliver us today.
Help us with your right hand.

Give us help in difficult situations.
With your help we shall be brave.

Reflection:
With TV and the internet and other recent forms of entertainment,
people are going to bed later, and,  when they can, getting up later and sleeping during the day.
But when we have the chance and motivation, getting up early in the morning is a beautiful experience....the best time for reflection and prayer, especially in a setting that has trees, flowers, birds, a pool of water etc. So we read above how King David used to get up early and use his lyre and harp to pray

Prayer:  Lord, please help me sometimes get up early!

Reading:  Revelation 3

He gave me this message for the church in Philadelphia:

"I am opening a new door of opportunity for you
to spread the Good News

I will move people to accept the Good News from you.
I will keep you safe in time of trial"

Reflection:
What an encouraging message! So much for people who say God doesn't get involved in our human affairs!  He opens doors!  He moves hearts!  He's a security guard!

Prayer: Jesus, please give me more opportunities to spread the Good News

Reading:  John 17

After saying many things to his disciples at the meal,
Jesus looked up to heaven and prayed
"Father, my time has come. Give eternal life to everyone you have entrusted to me

Eternal life if this: to know you, the only true God, and Jesus Christ whom you have sent

I have glorified you on earth, and finished the work you gave me to do.
Now, Father, it is time for you to glorify me with the glory I had with you
before the world existed

Protect those you have given me. Protect them from Satan.
Consecrate them in the truth

As you sent me into the world, so I am sending them into the world.
May all my followers be united, so that the world will believe it was you who sent me"

Reflection:
Jesus now does publicly what he was probably doing privately all through his life: having a conversation with his Father in Heaven. And his conversation in this case is about his followers, about us, praying for us.  We too should be having a conversation right through the day with Father, Son and Holy Spirit...a conversation of praise, but also - like Jesus - a conversation of praying for people as we meet them during the day

Prayer: Jesus, please help me have a conversation with you right through the day
