R-R-P  Reading - Reflection - Prayer   Jan 16, 2013
With readers' comments, below

Reading:  Proverbs 3

Let kindness and loyalty never leave you.
Tie them around your neck.

In everything you do, keep God in mind.
He will help you take the right path.

Love God and turn your back on evil.
This will give good health to your body.

Do not refuse a kindness to anyone who asks,
if it is in your power to help them.

Reflection:
Like so many parts of the Bible, these words are value-packed,
full of practical importance for our daily lives.
e.g. love of God and avoidance of evil is good for health
(with the opposite also true: avoidance of God and love of evil is bad for health)

Lord, please help us love you, avoid evil....and be kind to people we should help

Reading:  Psalm 106

O give thanks to the Lord for he is good.
His great love is without end.

They are happy who do what is right,
who at all times remember what is just.

When our ancestors came out of Egypt,
they forgot the greatness of God's love.

Each time they strayed, God forgave them.
But still they continued to forget God who was their saviour,
God who had done such great things for them in Egypt.

Reflection:
This reading reinforces the idea in Proverbs:
"Doing right makes us glad. Doing bad, makes us sad",
with the same linked choice: remembering or forgetting God

Prayer:  O Lord, our God, please don't let us forget your love

Reading:  Revelation 2

He gave me this message for the church in Thyatira:

"I know how charitable you are.
I see you faith and devotion, and your courage in suffering

But some of you are being misled by a false teacher.
You are imitating her bad behavior

Listen to this message and repent"

Reflection:
The problem of false leaders and their bad example.
Jesus gave us the way to check if leaders are good or bad:
do they produce good fruit (love of God and love of neighbour)
or bad fruit (forgetfulness of God, not much care for others)

Prayer: Jesus, please don't let us be misled by false leaders

Reading:  John 15-16

At the meal, Jesus said to his disciples
"If you belonged to the world, the world would be friendly to you.
But because my choice withdrew you from the world,
therefore the world is unfriendly to you

Just as I am hated and persecuted, so you also will be hated and  persecuted.
As the Scripture says 'They hated me for no reason'

I am telling you these things now, so that when they happen, your faith will not be shaken

Reflection:
We should try to win the respect/friendship of our children/students/workmates/neighbours etc,
and we should try to be easy to get along with. But being a Christian is not about trying to win a popularity contest. Jesus did all he could to relate to people, but even he became unpopular with some.

Prayer: Jesus, if people are unfriendly because I am a Christian, please give me strength and courage
