R-R-P  Reading - Reflection - Prayer   Jan 8, 2013
With readers' comments, below

Reading:  Job 20-21

Zophar then said it was unreasonable for Job to think that his situation was an exception
as regards God's justice.

Job replied:
"I can't help asking why do wicked people prosper while good people suffer?"

Reflection:
Since the beginning of the human race, people have asked the same question as Job:
How come bad things happen? Especially...how come
good people suffer?
This page shows how Jesus is on the side of people suffering,
and how suffering is like a computer virus

Prayer: Dear God, please help us to understand the mystery of good and evil

Reading:  Psalm 99

The Lord is king.  He is great in Sion.
His power is seen throughout the world.

Among his priests were Aaron, Moses and Samuel.
They prayed to the Lord and he answered their call.

Let peoples everywhere praise his name.
He is holy, full of power.

Reflection:
Some people say God does not "interfere" in the world.
But our own experience provides many examples of God's Providence and care in our lives
....so many "co-incidences" etc
..which is why we, like Aaron, Moses and Samuel, can pray...and God will answer our call

Prayer:  Lord, may all peoples know and love you ...and pray to you for help

Reading:  3 John

From the Elder (St John) to my dear friend Gaius.
People have told me of your faithfulness to the truth.

It is always a great joy for me
when I hear that my children are living according to the truth

Thank you for your hospitality to believers who travel to spread the Good News.
Such people deserve whatever support we can give them

Reflection:
In China there are thousands of local Mainland Christians who spend a large part of the year
"travelling to spread the Good News"....going to remote villages to give out Bibles and to speak about Jesus.  See stories in this report from China

Prayer: Jesus, please bless and protect people who travel to spread the Good News

Reading:  John 13

While Jesus and his disciples were eating a meal just before the Passover,
Jesus got up from the table, removed his outer clothing,
and wrapped a  towel around his waist as an apron

He then poured water into a basin, and like a slave,
began to wash the disciples' feet,
wiping them with the towel he was wearing

After washing their feet he said to them
"You are right in calling  me Master and Lord.
If I, then, the Lord and Master, have humbly served you, you should humbly serve one another

I have given you an example so that you may copy what I have done for you"

Reflection:
To say sorry for the abuse crisis, it would be good if the Church had "A Year of Humble Service"
during which an extra effort could be made to reach out to poor and hurting people in society,
a year in which expensive banquets could be replaced by meals with the poor, a year in which priests at Mass wore the deacon's simple service stole instead of lavish vestments

Prayer: Jesus, please help us to serve other people humbly,
just as you humbly served the disciples
