R-R-P  Reading - Reflection - Prayer   Jan 5, 2013
With readers' comments, below

Reading:  Job 15-17

Eliphaz then said that Job's own words condemned him
since he was in fact challenging God.

Job replied that he was sick and tired of listening to his friends' speeches.
He also said he felt death was not far away:

"My breath grows weak, I am ridiculed by everyone, every fiber of my heart is broken.
I have no hope."

Reflection:
"Ridiculed by everyone....broken heart"
....these words apply to people experiencing extreme stress/disappointment/suffering
....like Jesus on the Cross

Prayer: Lord, help of the helpless,
please help people who feel their situation is hopeless

Reading:  Psalm 97

Sing a new song to the Lord for he has worked wonders.
His right hand has brought salvation.

The Lord has made known his salvation.
He has shown his justice to the nations.

He has remembered his truth and love
for the house of Israel.

All the ends of the earth have seen the salvation of our God.
Shout to the Lord all the earth, ring out your joy.

Sing psalms to the Lord with the harp,
with the sound of music.

Let the sea, the world and all peoples
acclaim the King, the Lord.

Let the rivers clap their hands
and the hills ring out their joy

at the presence of the Lord,
for he comes to rule the earth.

He will rule the world with justice
and the peoples with fairness.

Reflection:
God loves all peoples in all nations, just like parents love all their children.
All peoples/nations should love God, just like all children should love their parents

Prayer: Lord, may all peoples in all countries know your love and goodness

Reading:  1 John 4-5

Anyone who says "I love God"
but hates his brother, is a liar

A man who does not love the brother he can see
cannot love God whom he has never seen

Who can overcome the world?
Only the person who believes that Jesus is the Son of God

God has given us eternal life,
and this life is in his Son

You who believe in the Son of God
have eternal life

Reflection:
In some religions, hatred is ok....but not in Christianity.
"Thou shalt not hate" is a clear teaching of the New Testament

Prayer: Jesus, please keep my heart free of hatred

Reading:  John 12
Jesus said to his apostles Andrew and Philip
"Now the time has come for the Son of Man to be glorified.
Unless a wheat grain goes into the ground and dies, it remains only a single grain.
But if it dies, it yields a rich harvest

Now sentence is being passed on this world. Now Satan is to be defeated.
And when I am lifted up from the earth, I shall draw all people to myself"

By these words, Jesus indicated the kind of death he would die

Reflection: 2,000 years after being lifted on the Cross,
Jesus has still not drawn all people to himself.
What did he mean when he said "all people"?
Was he just hoping, praying that all people would come to him?
Or is the problem his followers?
We haven't told people about the Cross?
We have compromised the message of the Cross?

Prayer: Jesus, lifted up on the Cross, may all peoples know and love you
