R-R-P  Reading - Reflection - Prayer   Jan 3, 2013
With readers' comments, below

Reading:  Job 8-10

Bildad then spoke of God's justice and the fate of people who forget God.

Job agreed and said how God was sole creator and judge of the world:
"He and no other stretched out the skies.
The Bear, Orion, the Pleiades and the Mansions of the South - all were made by him.

"Challenging God is unthinkable.
Yet I know I am innocent and I'm being punished unjustly.

I also know that God knows I'm innocent.
So why am I being punished?  This is my question."

Reflection:
Job continues to think more deeply about the "mystery of suffering"
...the "Why? Why? Why?" that everyone asks at times...especially people in great pain

Prayer: Dear God, please save us in time of trial

Reading:  Psalm 96

O sing a new song to the Lord.
Sing to the Lord, all the earth.
O sing to the Lord, bless his name.

Proclaim his help day by day.
Tell among the nations his glory,
and his wonders among all the peoples.

It was the Lord who made the heavens.
Give the Lord, you families of peoples,
give the Lord glory and honor.

Bring an offering and enter his temple.
Worship the Lord in his sacred place.

Let the heavens rejoice and earth be glad.
Let the sea and all within it thunder praise.

Let the land and all it bears rejoice,
all the trees of the forest shout for joy.

Everyone and everything,
give the Lord glory and honor.

Reflection:
We praise and admire artists/writers/poets/musicians for their beautiful work.
How much more we should admire and praise the Artist of heaven and earth...and ourselves

Prayer: Lord, you are our Creator. We love and praise you

Reading:  1 John 3

This has taught us love:
that Jesus gave up his life for us.
We too should give up our lives for others

If you see someone in need
and refuse to help him,
how can the love of God be in you?

Our love must be put into practice, not be just words.
Anyone who loves God must also love other people

Reflection:
God has been so good to us.
Can we show a bit more goodness to others?

Prayer: Jesus, help me put my love into practice by helping people in need

Reading:  John 12

Six days before the Passover, Jesus went to Bethany,
for a dinner at  the home of Lazarus, Mary and Martha

Mary put expensive ointment on Jesus' feet.
Then she wiped his feet with her hair

Judas Iscariot, the disciple who was going to betray Jesus,
said "Why wasn't this ointment sold and the money given to the poor?"

He said this not because he cared about the poor, but because he was a thief.
He was in charge of the moneybag and would steal from it

Jesus replied "Leave her alone. She is anticipating and honoring my burial.
Besides, the poor will always be with you. But I will soon be gone"

Reflection: Judas' betrayal of Jesus' values started long before the Last Supper

Prayer: Jesus, please help people in charge of money not to steal
