From John W: due to extra work for asylum seekers and hospital patients - in addition to full time prison ministry - I need to cut back on the time I give to this website. In future the site will be much simpler. I have asked the site's kind weekly bloggers - Chris, Darlene and Martin - to change to "occasional" instead of "weekly" mode. I have also encouraged C, D & M to try posting on other sites which might give them a wider readership than this site.  When Chris published an article on PrayTell not long ago, it attracted more than 70 comments.  In future v2catholic will also focus more on the poor, and will encourage readers to increase concern about issues like these

Today's Bible readings  (from Sunday Mass)

Reflection on today's readings by Daniel Daring:
Today salvation has come to this house

It seems that two thousand year ago it was easy to experience salvation. One could decide to see Jesus, climb a tree and then the Lord was calling him by name. How about today? Well. The Good News of the Gospel retains its power.  It is today that Jesus must enter our house; it is also today that salvation comes to our lives. But it comes to those who declare that they are lost and make an effort to meet Jesus

David Timbs

Two Marginals up a tree: Zacchaeus and God watching out for Jesus
God never ceases being most comfortably at home with the widow, the orphan, the poor, the stranger. God values the ones so despised and rejected that they have to climb a tree for refuge, for a sense of personal dignity, worth and ultimately, salvation. They were and are God’s People

Smile - to go with today's Gospel

C.H. Spurgeon once asked a student who was training for ministry to preach a sermon with no preparation. The result merits an entry in the Guinness Book of World Records for the shortest sermon ever. Appropriately, it was on the subject of Zacchaeus, and this is how it went:

"First, Zacchaeus was a man of very small stature; so am I.
Second, Zacchaeus was very much up a tree; so am I.
Third, Zacchaeus made haste and came down; so will I."
With that, the student sat down to shouts of more more from his fellows. Spurgeon stated he could not improve on that if he tried!

All Souls Day

Bible readings at Mass for All Souls Day

A beautiful All Souls Day reflection:
Those gone before us

Because of the scandal of Indulgences at the time of Martin Luther,
many Christian groups don't believe in praying for the dead

But in all cultures there are special days for remembering the dead,
for hoping/wishing/praying they are at peace

No matter what some people might say against praying for the dead,
our hearts, our instincts, tell us that it is good to wish the dead
"eternal peace", "eternal rest", "eternal life"....to visit graves on this day, on anniversaries, or at any time

See: All Souls Day for all faiths is a day to remember

The old time pastor was galloping down the road, rushing to get to church on time. Suddenly his horse stumbled and pitched him to the ground.  In the dirt with a broken leg, the pastor called out, “All you saints in Heaven, help me get up on my horse!”

Then, with superhuman effort, he leaped onto the horse’s back and fell off the other side.

Once again on the ground, he called to Heaven, “All right, just half of you this time!”

As I continue to become immersed in the world of HK's asylum seekers, I more clearly see why no one wants to help them ...and how difficult they are to help. But the longer they are not helped, the more complicated their cases become ... e.g. as single men start to father children by more than one refugee woman ....and such children often miss out on kindergarten and then cannot cope at primary school ....and by teenage years are easy prey for drug traffickers

A blind father used to go to his son's football game each Saturday.
Half way through the football season, the father died one Tuesday.
The following Saturday the boy played the game of his life.
Coach asked "How come you played so well today?"
Boy: "Because it's the first time my father has ever seen me play".
Boy understood that there are no blind people in Heaven

A priest told the little kids they could come Trick-or-Treating at the rectory but they should dress up as one of the Saints.

So the kids arrived - one a little boy dressed up as St. Anthony, another as St. Joseph, a little girl as St. Clare - and then there was a kid in a dog costume.

So Father asked "Where's your saint costume?"

The little boy replied: "I'm SAINT BERNARD!"
