The conflict in Syria is a proxy war - see this excellent summary of foreign involvement ("support for the opposition; support for the government"). With so many nations already involved, an attack by the US could escalate the conflict into a regional war

What a mess. So much suffering for civilians.
Does this conflict have to run its course of death and destruction, or can something still be done to put out the flames of war?  Gandhi, where are you?

Three times in the 21st century, Australia’s bishops have measured the fidelity of the nation’s Catholics to regular Mass attendance. In 2001, 2006 and 2011, coinciding with the Commonwealth Census, the ACBC Pastoral Research Office (PRO) has conducted National Counts of Attendance in every parish of every diocese. The results of the 2011 Count, recently published, reveal a Catholic community with diminished and diminishing fidelity to the Eucharistic celebration

Pope:
  Saturday 7th (tomorrow!)

Pope urges G20 leaders to seek Syria peace talks          Full text of letter

Pope Francis has urged G20 leaders to abandon the "futile pursuit" of a military solution in Syria and work instead for dialogue and negotiation to end the conflict.

In a letter to the Russian president, Vladimir Putin, who is hosting this week's G20 summit, Francis lamented that "one-sided interests" had prevailed in Syria, preventing a peaceful solution and allowing the continued "senseless massacre" of innocents.

Amid unconfirmed rumours on Twitter that Francis had placed a phone call to Bashar al-Assad in the last few hours and may yet call Paris and the White House, the pope stepped up his call for peace in Syria amid threatened US-led military strikes following an apparent chemical weapons attack.

Francis will host a peace vigil in St Peter's Square on Saturday. On Thursday, the Vatican summoned ambassadors accredited to the Holy See to outline its position, calling for the respect for all minorities including Christians, and for Syria's opposition forces to distance themselves from extremists.

Pope: Saturday 7th a day of
 fasting and prayer for Syria

What moral theologians say about getting involved in Syria

Pope repeats his appeal for peace
This coming Saturday we will live together a special day of fasting and prayer for peace in Syria, the Middle East, and throughout the world. I renew the invitation to the whole Church to live this day intensely, and even now I express gratitude to the other Christian brethren, to the brethren of other religions and to the men and women of good will who desire to join in this initiative, in places and ways of their own. I especially urge the Roman faithful and pilgrims to participate in the prayer vigil here in St. Peter's Square at 19.00, in order to ask the Lord for the great gift of peace. May a powerful cry for peace go up from every land!

CA BISHOPS  (New) STATEMENT      Bishops' previous statement

I fear there is very little time left to resolve the hunger strike before death or irreparable injury to the prisoners occurs. The Mediation Team has been pressing CDCR to engage in serious discussions about SHU conditions and procedures.  While CDCR officials have met with us, and our conversations have generally been cordial, their willingness to implement serious and substantive change is lacking. Recently, their position seems to have hardened. Presumably, this stance reflects that of the governor, the ultimate warden of this state

Can we hope that right judgement will win out in Washington too?

Still another issue might weigh more heavily on the President's conscience. Iraqi oil exports have fallen by 40 per cent over the past three months as the country edges closer to civil war. Libya is in a state of political mayhem, with oil output down four-fifths of the level to which it peaked after the overthrow of Gaddafi two years ago. UN sanctions against Iran have reduced its oil exports by 1.2 million barrels a day. And the two major oil-producing powers, Russia and Saudi Arabia, are facing off against one another in Syria. Is this really the moment to send in face-saving missiles?

   mini-Blog
The past two months have been a steep learning curve for me about the corruption situation in Tanzania. Each day I receive a new lesson as I check the Tanzanian media and chat with Tanzanian inmates. Previously I learnt that the President's eldest son is widely regarded as being an important drug lord. Recently I learnt that a grandson of another VIP is a drug trafficking inmate in Hong Kong!
