IS THERE A GOOD SAMARITAN TODAY?
There is in Iceland. There the government is the Good Samaritan and the government wrote down all mortgages on houses in negative equity to the value of the house plus 10% thus giving hope to people caught out in the bankers’ easy-loan housing boom.
Is
Iceland the only country in the world that values its citizens and society more than banks?
Is
Iceland
the only Christian country in the world, judged by its actions?

Email from Australia: Channel 9 will be premiering The Bible, a new 10-part television series, in a double episode (today), July 16, at 9.00 pm. It tells the great story from Genesis to Revelation at a time when many people have never opened a Bible.  The series has been a huge success in US, where 13 million viewers watched the premiere. This is a wonderful opportunity to show broadcasters that programs featuring Christian values rate well – do tune in, and encourage your friends to do so!

29,000 inmates on hunger strike. California holds nearly 12,000 people in extreme isolation at a cost of over $60 million per year. The cells have no windows, and no access to fresh air or sunlight. Prisoners in solitary confinement spend 22 to 24 hours a day in an 8-foot by 10-foot cell in conditions of extreme isolation and sensory deprivation. Some languish in these tomb-like cells for years or even decades. And in the US, the practice is far from rare. Although solitary confinement is often thought of as a last resort for the most dangerous criminals, in fact 80,000 prisoners are held in isolation in state and federal prisons across the country on any given day

Who is my neighbor?  (hospitality...)
Many times I have tried to justify my lack of involvement in helping others with the same question. It never worked, because I knew the answer. Who is my neighbor? It is anybody who happens to cross the path of my life and either verbally or silently expresses his/her need for help.
Neither being in a hurry nor compassion fatigue excuse me from getting involved.

Teachers and the Church's abuse scandal
In these days where clerical sex abuse is so widely reported and discussed, Catholic teachers and Catholic school families may well feel the pressure about what is right and just in the unfolding story revealed by the Royal Commission .... a pressure fuelled as much by disbelief and anger more than any urge to be defensive or apologetic. Many Americans who most fervently identify as Christians and promote Christian values in society are also among the most ardent “law and order” advocates, extremely tough on crime and opposed to any emphasis on rehabilitation. Perhaps at some level, we all intuit an unsettling truth: Radical forgiveness, as articulated and practiced by Jesus, might in fact be deeply threatening to the social order.
