A Vatican "Instruction" of 1659 (part 2; see yesterday for part 1):   And since it is as it were written into human nature that every man, in his judgement and in his heart, puts his customs and his country above all others, there exists no more powerful motive for hatred and revulsion than changing ancestral customs, especially those that men have always practised as far back as the memories of their forefathers go, and even more so if, in place of the practices abolished, one substitutes from outside, those of another country   - Ross: A Vision Betrayed, p. 185

Joseph Girzone: The importance of having courage to face problems

Friends and family get sick after a while with people who wallow in self-pity and cowardly blame their problems on other people. They have to grow up and be the man or woman they should be. And when they make the effort and humbly ask God for the help they need, God never fails them

A Vatican "Instruction" of 1659 (sounds like Vatican II !) Do not attempt in any way to persuade these people to change their customs, their habits and their behaviour, as long as they are not evidently contrary to religion and morality. What could be more absurd than to transport France, Italy or some other European country to the Chinese? Do not bring them our countries but the Faith, which does not reject or harm the customs and habits of any people...but wishes to see them preserved in their entirety  -  Ross: A Vision Betrayed, p. 185

John W:  Same-sex marriage: two elephants in the (men's) room
On the issue of same-sex marriage, I see two elephants in the men's room that no one wants to talk about. The first one is taboo and is rarely mentioned in same-sex marriage discussions. The second one is on the way to becoming a taboo topic. By tabooing these topics, we are not doing the gay community or the general community a favour. On the contrary, we are putting both at risk

Pope Francis: Say yes to life, not death
"All too often, people do not choose life, they do not accept the ‘Gospel of Life’ but let themselves be led by ideologies and ways of thinking that block life, that do not respect life, because they are dictated by selfishness, self-interest, profit, power and pleasure, and not by love, by concern for the good of others.”       (+ blessing of 1,400 motor-bike riders!)

Ireland: Money-lenders increase grip on poorest
When a money-lender knocks on the door of a poor family and offers immediate cash,
the family out of desperation accept the loan ....but then can't pay it back

Comment from Tuesday Ireland blogger Martin Mallon:

The poorest of Irish families are having to resort to moneylenders. This is a result of the government bailing out the    banks, then permitting the same banks to crucify Irish citizens and adding to citizens’ financial problems by introducing austerity measures to pay for the bank bailout. Thank God for the St Vincent De Paul Society, but why are the bishops not condemning the governments’ policies vociferously and often; it would certainly help the poor as Francis keeps demanding

Pope Francis: God doesn't belong to any particular people
Jesus doesn't tell the Apostles and us to form an exclusive group of elite members

Perhaps we are a little upset with someone. So let's say to the Lord: 'Lord, I am angry with this person. I will pray to you for them.' Praying for those we are angry with is a good step in this law of love. Shall we do it? Let's do it today!”

Pope at Mass: The grace not to speak ill of others

“There is no need to go to a psychologist to know that when we denigrate another person it is because we are unable to grow up and need to belittle others, to feel more important."

“I would ask the Lord to give us all the grace to watch our tongues, to watch what we say about others." “It is a small penance, but it bears a lot of fruit."

To the surprise of Simon and all his guests, Jesus disregarded the concept of purity and its customary laws. What a shock to all religious leaders present at that dinner! What a relief to the woman!
