Sunday November 4
An assessment of recent Synod:
All dressed up
but did they go anywhere?
David
Timbs
(Sunday
blogger from Australia)
It
was little more than an exercise in
ecclesiastical correctness which was contrived, pre-scripted and came with
predetermined outcomes.
"A
legitimate criticism of the preparation for the Synod is that the
local episcopal conferences were not sufficiently involved beforehand".
So
much energy and time of this Synod was taken up by western bishops who
launched endless invective against secularism

The
dumbing down of society
John W
It's now more and more common,
in any group of people
- a family gathering, a
few friends getting together, even a group of
priests/religious - that people observe an unspoken law: don't discuss anything
serious. Stick to topics like food, travel, sport, entertainment etc

Jesus'
preference for the poor (1)
Joseph
Girzone
And
when Jesus began his public ministry, he immediately snubbed the snobs,
the priests, the Pharisees, the scribes and the lawyers. And
I know these words are harsh, but that is precisely what he did, and those
people were the very ones his Father had chosen to lead his people. Jesus
could have walked among them and cuddled up to them
and cultivated their friendships, but from the very start he ignored them,
and chose to walk through the smelly ranks of the unwashed in the bazaars
and the streets and hung around the fishermen of the shores of the Galilee
in Capernaum, where the hardworking poor hung out.

The
Law of Love
Martin Mallon
(Tuesday blogger from Ireland)
Where
does this leave the institutional Church? Clearly it is more important to obey
this Law of Love than to obey the Church. Yes, Church teaching is useful for
guidance,
but Jesus puts the Law of Love above Church teaching
Vatican

The Church is experiencing two
revolutions: (1) people are leaving the formal rituals; (2) education, health, aged care
are flourishing.

Jesus'
preference for the poor (2)
Joseph Girzone
Caring
for the poor by Christians was
a unique phenomenon in the pagan world and as time went on, this concern
for the poor was extended to others outside of Jesus’ family who needed
assistance or medical attention, esp orphans & widows
.

Irish priest @ Austrian meeting
The
Initiative has had little contact with the Austrian bishops during the
past year. The leadership believes that the Austrian Bishops are afraid of
Rome: They are prepared to take orders from Rome, rather than listen to
the pastoral needs of the people

31B:
Not
like Cain but like Jesus
It seems
much easier to declare openly our love of God, to burn offerings and give Him
sacrifices, than to love our brothers and sisters. Joining
together the love of God with the love of neighbor and making the love of
neighbor the proof of loving God, take away any justification for
emulating a “Cainian” religiosity |
