The
Alienation of the Boomers
David
Timbs
(Sunday
blogger from Australia)
If
the leadership of the Church is to succeed in winning back the trust
and confidence of the Boomer generation, it will need to learn quickly
the lost art of listening to and conversing with an adult laity which is no
longer prepared to bleat like sheep and mutely follow the shepherd. The Church
at Vatican II called for a mature and educated laity and now it has got what it
wished for. The big challenge now is, can the institutional Church catch up and
keep pace with them?

Be aware during the coming year of efforts to dumb the Council
down, to convince you that the Council didn't change the Church
very much. After you recall what kind of Church we
lived in before Vatican II, I think you will agree with me, and rejoice
with me and be glad for what the Council did do, irreversibly, I hope

Spirituality
that appeals to Gen Y
David Timbs (CathBlog)
While
Gen Y has little or no time for the institutional Church, its youth do
relate very positively to the no-nonsense, down to earth and challenging
figure of Jesus. Serendipity and dogma are lost on them but not the real
Jesus of the Gospels who connects with their experience of being human. He
can speak to them and for them with persuasion and intelligibility.
Vatican
II - unfinished business
Paul
Collins
Congar says he felt that historically Vatican II came 25 years "too
early", that only the youngest bishops had imbibed the renewed
theological, historical and scriptural studies that underpinned the
conciliar documents. The result: the Council was forced to compromise on
several important issues, and we are still working through the
consequences of those compromises today. Congar thought the Council
"had stopped half-way on many questions.

New
Evangelisation
Martin Mallon
(Tuesday blogger from Ireland)
So
we are in a situation where the New Evangelisation is directed at “those
who, though baptized, have drifted away from the Church” and
yet we are expected to believe that liturgy will bring these lapsed
Catholics back to the Church, even though many will have experienced the
liturgy before they left the Church and in some cases liturgy was a reason
for leaving. How can they experience the liturgy if they are not
physically in the Church?
Concentration
on liturgy is going to evangelise few lapsed Catholics. Concentration on
our daily lives, ecumenism and the poor appears to be the way forward and
constantly deepening our relationship with Jesus is the engine of growth. Synod

filled with exemplary initiatives and beautiful celebrations, but also promote a

Bartimaeus’
Faith in Jesus
Peter
and demons were told not to reveal Jesus' identity. Bartimaeus
was allowed to proclaim to the whole world his expectant faith
in Jesus as the Messiah. Those
who wanted Bartimaeus to be quiet were those who were leaving Jericho with
Jesus. It's often the case: in order to reach Jesus, you have to bypass
the circle of the so-called pious ones, those who assume that they

Vatican
II anniversary:
Homily by Bishop Geoff Robinson
I remember that first exhilarating month when
John XXIII left the Vatican more often than the pope before him had in nineteen years. I remember him visiting the major
prison in Rome and, rather than delivering a profound discourse on the morality of
prison life, telling the prisoners of an uncle of his who had done time for sheep
stealing. He won my imagination and my undying affection, as he did for millions
of other people
