"Surprising

future of the center-left
John
Allen (NCR
The center-left, however, sometimes seems
adrift. You can find these folks working in chanceries, ministering
in parishes and teaching in Catholic schools, not to mention making
up a good chunk of the rank-and-file. They don't like some of what
they're seeing from Rome and the U.S. bishops, but they don't want
to end up in opposition either
See comment by Tom Acemoglu
(Aug 10) which begins
As a "center-right" Catholic, I have found that the
most fruitful dialogue happens amongst the "center-left"
and the "center-right". The "center-left" can be
a prophetic reminder of the needs of the poor and marginalized. They
also aren't trying to undo the Church but try to work within a
system that they feel needs reforms that aren't necessarily systemic

Congar
and the Council
Martin Mallon
(Tuesday blogger from Ireland)
Congar
never took his eye off the ball and commenting on the closing Mass of the
Council remarked that “...there was something wrong. It was all about the
pope. It gave the impression the pope was above the church rather than in
it"...The Council planted the seeds of a new
ecclesiology – a new church. But the obstructionism
of the Roman Curia and of the forces of the right led to too many
essential points being expressed as compromises

How
to interpret Vatican II
Fr Harry Winter OMI
(Thursday blogger from USA)
In 1965, the sixteen documents, and the
energy of Vatican II, arose in a certain direction.
But several very important events soon occurred, practically
unforeseen by the Council Fathers, which have affected how we view Vatican

With J O'Malley's famous words: "from commands to invitations,
from laws to ideals, from definition to mystery, from threats to
persuasion, from coercion to conscience, from monologue to dialogue, from
ruling to service, from withdrawn to integrated, from vertical to
horizontal, from exclusion to inclusion, from hostility to friendship,
from rivalry to partnership, from suspicion to trust"

“Never
see a need without trying to do something about it.”
Instead of attributing such weight to John Paul II's Assisi meeting in taking the sting out of Vatican II, could we not just say that the determining factor - far beyond any influence from the charismatic movement - was the election of John Paul II himself? The next most significant factor was his appointment of Cardinal Ratzinger to head up CDF This

there are three types of families
----------------
John, I MUCH appreciate your taking the time
and energy to answer my question -- one that may have "put you on the
spot." I am trying to find where I fit right now, whether there is
any hope for me in any sense in the Catholic church, perhaps even on the
fringes, or whether I need to build a future for myself and my family, as
appropriate, in an Episcopalian church or other tradition. To be truthful,
I am so "done" with the woman priest issue, gay issue, and have
been done for years with the birth control issue. I think that your blog
does a very good service for those who wish to change some things about
the church, perhaps bring it up to date to a degree. But, the church is so
far behind, and has created so many wounds, I'm not sure whether it can
become anything but a relic in Europe, and, down the line, in the States
as it continues to lose relevance - Laura
